Build looks incredible! The seats are awesome. How do you get around the airbags built into OE seats?

The front seats look great Shane. How did your driving position turn out. Did it meet your expectations and is comfortable to drive.

Cheers Phil you're an inspiration for everyone on here to build their cars!

It's been a slow burn build over the past 7.5 years of ownership. most guys would have had 2-3 new cars in that time!

Code them out is all I can do unfortunately...

My installer done a mega job in terms of getting them as low as possible! The GPT3 is quite a big seat and without custom mounts may not have fitted as you dont realise the wings on the seat can hit door trim (since I sit so far back the door trim kinda tapers in further it goes out so when you go to close the door the door trim hits the seat)

So quite tricky to get it fitting just right then I wanted the seat pushed hard up against trans tunnel so it was centered and to get away from door trim clearance issues.

Driving with these seats is such a revelation, my legs have a more natural angle/approach to the pedals and being a manual you appreciate things like that. I also have approx 3" of headroom now (had finger gap before) so a track day is now possible to get a helmet on!

Getting in and out of them requires a bit of technique, driving the car to work and trying to get out of the car with a car parked beside me was difficult as you cant open the E92 door right up to climb out.

Hitting some twisties in a short blap last week, the amount of control and feedback through the seat to your butt was crazy good!

so 12 months from conception to trimming to install quite a bit of expense was involved with custom one off seat shells, trimming and mounts (spent way more than what a set of recaro sportsters would cost - i dont fit in them) but I'm definately happy with them, and I like having unique custom touches on the car

Whilst my car was in getting race seats fitted I had a used stage 3 LPFP fitted up so I could start tuning on E40.

Typically most guys use a hobbs switch, but this is somewhat a PITA having to run a sensor off chargepipe etc these days you can trigger the 2nd pump by the exhaust solenoid. Huge thanks to vtl he manufactured me a stage 3 LPFP wiring kit which is pnp which connects to the exhaust solenoid to trigger the 2nd pump

During the logs first thing I noticed was HPFP was crashing at 6k rpm..

https://datazap.me/u/dr-jekl/log-157...=3-13-21-22-25

https://datazap.me/u/dr-jekl/log-157...=3-13-21-22-25

After discussion with my tuner (Tim Murray) he noticed the LPFP was low also and this is most likely the culprit for the rail pressure for crashing.

So the general consensus is that the pump/s could be stuffed so my installer recommended buying two fresh new pumps and drop them in to replace both of the used pumps.

Thanks to VTL he mentioned that there are quite a few fake Walboro pumps out there and they flake out its best to try by from a trusted retailer and these guys had them for a great price (my workshop said this RRP price is his buy price)

https://www.tiperformance.com.au/pro...ump-f90000267/

Hopefully I can drop these in later this week and hopefully this resolves my issue

Well it turned out the stage 3 LPFP I had was cactus just a shit design by the look of it, seems early fuelit stage 3's were pretty rough or may have been a DIY design.

So I bit the bullet and bought a new precision raceworks stage 3 lpfp they shipped it nice and quick, but was pricey as i got copped with like a $220 australian customs handling etc fee so it cost me $1700 ish AUD landed

Been busy with prepping a house for sale, have only just recently sold it and this week filled the car up with E40 and noticed the needle was still stuck on empty (bloody stage 3 lpfp issues still kicking my arse!)

I had new lpfp and a new lpfp filter feed installed, the E92 has two floats on both sides of the tank so i guess one of these is jammed or faulty

First log on rev 1 map felt ordinary, looking at the data timing corrections was the cause (i have fresh NGK 95770 plugs and BL R8 coils) so Tim said for whatever reason my setup didnt like lower timing and map rev 2 felt great, instant butt dyno detected gains pulled hard to redline.

(Note rev 1 map in VD plot above obviously down on peak power due to timing corrections)

I'll get E40 dialled in and maybe later on in the year will investigate the spool helix 3x and run E70.

I'd recently bought a carpet extractor to clean/shampoo the carpets in my cars, its a numatic george great machine and surprisingly even though i always vac my 335i after using it the accumulation of 13 years of use the carpets still were quite contaminated. They came up a treat using the extractor and autosmart APC and carpet shampoo.

I'd also ordered some new door sill covers before xmas, just hadnt gotten a chance to install them yet. With the interior looking so schmick and new i thought some fresh upper and lower door sill covers would nice. Cost me almost $600 definately overpriced pieces of plastic...

Interior looks great as usual Shane. Sorry to read about your issues with the Stage 3 Fuel-it LPFP. I installed one of these about 3 yrs ago and haven't had any issues what so ever. The engine appears to be loving the taste of ethanol. Good numbers so far. When the tune is sorted, you should feel the difference.

I haven’t updated my build thread in ages as TBH I haven’t done much to the old gal!

When I had a new precision raceworks stage 3 LPFP installed when I filled up with fuel the gauge stayed where it was at and kept going down until it hit full empty..

Running an E40 blend this makes it extremely difficult for when you go to fill up you don’t know how much fuel you really need. Then covid hit I sold a house and moved into a new build and I bought a new daily driver…

I’d been chasing my mechanic for a while he focuses solely on race builds these days so he builds the car from scratch (strips car roll cage paints it designs aero builds engine builds shocks etc etc) so huge builds but finally managed to him in to installed a slightly thicker front sway bar.

I went with a E93 m3 bar chatting to vince he believes the heavier chassis of the E92 compared to the E88 benefit from a thicker front sway to make the car turn in and respond quicker to steering inputs albeit with the trade off being slightly less front end grip and had my mechanic check the sensor.

Turns out the sensor was faulty from new a small piece of the circuit board was broken, when I was chatting to Vince he informed me that he had installed a PR stage 2 and the cores they use are a Chinese rep item not a OE VDO.. Bit disappointing to hear when they charge big $ for them, but I can understand why they go this way when they junk most of the components to build a stage 3..

Used sensor from titium to swap in:

PR were quick to respond and have sent me another sensor, but after learning that they’re Chinese items and the oem item new was about $200+ AUD delivered from FCP I decided to look for a used item and thankfully titium had a used one he didn’t need. Wacked the used sensor in from titium and away it went, so I can now start tuning once again with Tuned By Tim and knock out some more map revisions!

Once the tune is done I don’t have too many more plans for the car (I would like to remove the gloss black roof wrap and respray it gloss black) fit some side skirt extensions and possibly design a custom front splitter to suit the rep M3 front bar and I have a set of solid subframe bushings and rear monoballs yet to install.

I was looking at a BBK, but I’m not tracking the car yet (sadly all the racetracks in my local area that are in development stages just seem to go quite and wither away) and the AP racing pro 5000R BBK’s are seriously expensive (but also extremely sexy!) but I’ll hold off and see what the future holds..

Like a lot of guys here on this forum over the years I've poured an obscene amount of $ into my E92. 95% of these guys have sold and moved on, but TBH over the years I haven’t really found a platform or a car I really want to get in on. The Audi RS3 sounds fantastic and responds great to a simple tune (was really impressed after driving a friends stage 1 APR with DP sounded mega drove nice) but to me for the price the car still looks a tad entry level (mainly the dash air vents etc but the digital dash is mega!)

The logical step would be a F80 M3 but to some extent it's kinda the same (3.0L TT RWD) and I’d need to spend a fair chunk of $ to get it to handle like the E92… I’ve always loved the R34 GTR, and sadly prices have gone crazy! No doubt it was a big regret for me buying the E92 instead of the R34 GTR VS2 that I was looking at getting onto back in 2011-2012…

So I decided that the E92 would remain, and I decided to buy a big comfortable slow boring daily driver. Something that wasn’t too fast or fun to drive (wouldn’t make the ol E92 feel special to drive on the weekends and it’d just never get driven if I bought say an RS3) I had always like the Audi SQ5 nice styling, sound great for a diesel and nice fit and finish. I test drove one local to me and the car looked great in pics but was quite rough in person.. it drove well and for an SUV it surprised me. I kept looking and with covid hitting I had to narrow my choices a lot as buying interstate was no longer as easy hopping on a flight to look at and pick up a car.. I had always been a 5 series fan since the E39, that car along with the E46 was just such a perfect design and started looking at E60 and F10 530d and 535d’s.

Id prefer the diesel for daily driving torque and economy and TBH the N55 can be known to require a lot of maintenance just like the N54!

A lot of the E60’s were just crap, too many kays too rough so decided to up my budget for an F10. I prefer the look of the wagon but they’re extremely rare and generally command a huge price premium. Since my wife’s car is a wagon I figured I don’t really need an SUV or wagon, as if I need to go to bunnings etc I’ll just use the Passat wagon.

After searching for some time a clean one owner example had popped up for sale literally up the road from where I lived. The owner is a surgeon at the local hospital, and had looked after the car quite well, it was quite clean inside with minimal wear on seats steering wheel mats etc (it was obvious that he had rarely had passengers in the car as the rear seats passenger seat were literally like new) it had a full BMW service history (with fresh brakes and a major service had been performed recently) and whilst the paint was free of too many large deep scratches or dents it was heavily swirled from years of having the car detailed by amateurs I guess, the car just needed a really good deep clean detailing in and out and its first paint correction.

At the time of purchase we were in full lockdown, so it gave me the opportunity to fully detail the car, paint the brake calipers detail the wheel liners, leatherique the seats, shampoo the carpets, detail the engine bay and do a full 3-4 day paint correction on the car and a ceramic coating. I also had a used set of rims to decontaminate polish and ceramic coat.

It turned out really nice, but was a lot of hard work the BMW clearcoat is very hard and it takes ages to cut the paint until the heavy swirls are removed, but yeah the before and after was astonishing as the paint had some much more depth and gloss and in the sun the carbon schwarz paint really comes alive with the metallic navy blue fleck.

My plans for the F10 is just to have a comfy reliable cruiser so I’ve done the following mods so far:

Purchased a set of 437M lightweight 19” rims of a M4 (the widths and offsets are great for a F10 and look quite nice)
Purchased a set of PS4S tyres I went with 255/40 19 up front and 275.40 19 rear. The rear tyre is 22mm bigger going from a 35 to a 40 profile but my speedo is now bang on and I love the meaty look of the rear tyres. This tyre fills up the rear guard gap and since I’m running oem springs the ride height is still nice and high to clear speed humps etc yet provides minimal wheel arch gap.
Dropped the engine oil, and used fresh 0W40 castrol LL04 with Liqui Moly ceratec additive
Dropped the diff oil and used fresh Castrol syntec 75W90
Had the ZF8 serviced with new genuine ZF LG8 fluid and a transmission pan/filter (the car had just over 100k kays and ZF recommend a trans service at 60kmiles/100k kays)
Have a xHP stage 3 ZF8 tune to go on the car (weirdly they didn’t offer a stage 1 or 2 for the 535d)
Installed a FMIC, the wagner was just under $2000 yet I bought a chinese rep for $460 landed which fitted up nicely (apparently the wagner use a Chinese core anyhow and just relabel and repackaged them)
Fitted a front M5 competition package swaybar and a rear M550D rear sway bar (the M5 rear sway doesn’t fit and this is a good upgrade combo commonly used by F10 owners)
Decided not to fit coilovers but use koni sport shocks and oem m sport springs (these are quite expensive on the F10 platform unfortunately, especially compared to F30’s!)
Have the intake manifold and intake cleaned from carbon buildup (apparently it was absolutely choked up with buildup and an astronomical amount had been removed)
Swapped out the oem chrome kidney grilles for black twin slat items
Fitted up some black euro plates – the white ones looked crap IMO on a black car

Now I have all of these items done I will look at a custom flash tune which will yield approx. +30-40 rwkw and +100nm of torque. I’ll also look at installing an EGR delete upon tuning the car.

After having the suspension work done and taking the car for a drive I was surprised how well composed the koni sports are (being adjustable dampers they’re currently at the mid setting) Hitting heavily potholed roads the dampers soak it up easily and in the bends the oem setup occasionally I would feel the rear tyre momentarily lose trac and skip out, whereas with the konis the car would maintain its line through the bend. The car feels a lot more responsive to steering inputs, but being an electric steering its not quite as nice as a hydraulic unit. Discussing with a fellow F10 owner he had coded his car, as apparently BMW had revised the steering tune to provide a more sporting nature. So now I have done the suspension and tyre mods, I’ll look into the coding so I can gauge the difference once it’s done.

The car was much more responsive to throttle inputs and pulled harder at high rpm with the intake clean (I had assumed it was lazy throttle mapping, as the car idled and ran sweet as a nut prior to the intake clean) The ZF8 fluid was apparently quite clean (had heard these come out filthy whereas the DCT’s fluid are generally clean) and TBH didn’t make a dramatic difference to how the trans felt. It’s definitely smoother when its cold and shifts are ever so slightly crisper, but thankfully it seemed the trans has had an easy life so far! But make no mistake the F10 still feels big and heavy compared to the E92 in the corners and under braking but it is now somewhat rewarding to hustle it in the twisties and it’s a great comfy cruiser out on the highway. Generally the economy for around town sits at 8.8L/100 which is respectable for a 6 cyl (by comparison my VW 2.0 TDI returns 6.5L) and out on the highway in the 6’s.

Not much left to do on the F10 once the EGR delete and tune is done, like all N series BMW motors it seems they have their own achilles heel… The timing chains on the diesel N57 can let go, the oil pumps can stop functioning and starve the engine of lubrication and the HPFP can also fail at high rpm (thankfully it has a mechanical waterpump and the injectors are reliable albeit these are bloody expensive like the N54 injectors) These are big $ items to repair I think I’ll hold off for a whole longer generally these fail at 150k kays + kinda thing and I only realistically commute approx. 7-9k kays P.A anyhow.. So for now it’ll be staying as a simple clean daily driver!

The toys at home in their new garage (sadly I couldn't build a massive 3-4 car garage due to the width of our lot, being in a somewhat premium suburb block of land are quite expensive!)

Brilliant mate .... yep, I still drop in for a look!

You'll get some good savings from it, our last bill was $20 for the quarter, but it was a mild start to summer didn't have to run the 20kw daikin ducted much.

New car looks great Shane. As usual, you have completed all of the detailing to get it into a mint condition. How is your 335i going these days? Are you happy with the new seats that you fitted?
