Update: INDY says exhaust cam is way out of time/position. He thinks engine is cranking slow due to partially seized exhaust cam journal/bearing. Good fuel and spark were verified.

Found 2011 engine with 70k locally. Going to swap it in this weekend. Original engine has 191k...RIP.

Sounds like taking it to the Indy was the right choice! Could have been chasing your tail for a while

“New” engine just delivered and it is clean as a whistle inside. Old engine: exhaust cam is 90 degrees out of position.

Did your "INDY" tell you WHY the Exhaust Cam (but presumably NOT the Intake Cam) is/was "90 degrees out of position"? Did he examine the Exhaust Cam VANOS UNIT (the unit on the front of the cam at the chain sprocket & NOT the Solenoid Valve) to see that all four BOLTS were intact? Is he aware that was the subject of a Recall Campaign in 2014, and was YOUR vehicle subject to and fixed BY that recall campaign? Did he do a Compression Test, and if so, what were the results?

If he can explain HOW the Exhaust Cam but NOT the Intake Cam (both driven by the same timing chain) is 90 degrees (that's 180 crank degrees) out of time, please post explanation HERE so we can all learn something.

I did a compression test: 180psi on cylinders 2, 3, 5, 6. 150psi on cylinders 1, 4.

Flats (used for locating cam timing) on exhaust is 90 degrees out of position relative to intake. Apparently, exhaust Vanos assembly shows signs of damage. He did not mention broken bolts. I will know more this afternoon when I get the car back. The thought is that one (or more) exhaust cam bearing was starved for oil and is partially seized. The added drag is overcoming the Vanos mechanism resulting in camshaft out of time. The engine seems to crank slower than normal if all was good. The engine is severely gunked up (PO) and I have been trying to slowing clean for years. So, it is plausible that material dislodged and plugged an oil passage. I liken it to the engine have clogged arteries and suffered a hear attack.

I decided a replacement engine with 68k miles ($1300) was a better solution than attempting a top end repair on a previously abused (by PO) engine with 191k.

Under the circumstances, almost certainly the best choice with an engine "sludged" by PO.

Thanks for the summary,
George

update: Car is running. Replacement engine sounds great and runs great. I still need to investigate failure mode on old engine. Will try to post results afterwards. Thanks for everyone’s help.
