Look for Rim Protector Tires - this feature is worth the cost
Its funny that people spend alot of money on 18",19" and 20 " rims with tire sets and then pick tires without rim protector ribs. Everytime I see it I don't know why someone would pick a standard rounded tire. The rubber rim protector edge is a feature you should always include in whatever set-up you have. You can go online at tirerack.com and others and check to see if the tire has it just by looking at it as it extends past the wheel rim edge. Actually I do not know why tire companies don't highlight it more. It saves your rims from curbs and makes your setup top notch whatever the brand. I think that feature is well worth the cost and if you want your car to look good and sharp its a requirement.

In 30 years of driving, I have yet to curb a wheel. There's no way I would consider this as a deciding factor as to what tires I bought. If it was a consideration, it would be about the 5th or 6th on the list of what to look for.

With standard size wheels and tires it is not critical but with wide wheels with spacers, and low aspect tires favored by many it is. When I walk the city I see lots of custom and high end rims with curb rash.

Plenty of experience with larger/wider/more aggressive than stock wheels. A little bump of rubber isn't going to do a whole lot, but I'll let you in on a little secret that will...don't drive your car into a damn curb.

It's not a requirement if you have any spatial awareness.
If you really think that smudge of rubber is going to prevent curb rash, then your wheel conditions are the least of your worries...

Actually the rubber rim will help if you are attentive. Recently I was looking for a lightly used sports coupe or equivalent on dealer lots while on the hunt for a new car. Alot of these cars have the new dark colored grey and black wheels and these show damage from a mile away. I don't know if its the Northeast using granite curbstones of uneven height or wide wheels are sticking more but almost all the cars had curb rash. Maybe in Boston where parking has become desperate and people are trying to squeeze into smaller spaces. Almost every Golf R's with the black Pretoria wheels has curb rash. Audi's, WRX's and BMW's too.

Most people who do not have to parallel park regularly won't understand the need for these types of tires. Its easy for people to say they've never scratched a wheel when they parallel park once in a blue moon. For someone like me, who drives into Washington DC everyday and has to park on the street, I parallel park 2-4 times a day.
That being said, I don't have Rim Protector Tires, nor have I curb rashed any of my wheels (at least on my e92!) so while these may offer the tiniest bit of wheel insurance, the best insurance is patience and a bit of skill. |

18 of the above mentioned 30 years of driving were in Chicago. Needless to say, parallel parking was pretty much an every day/everywhere occurrence. Still, never curbed a wheel. I don't have anything against the "tire protectors", the point I was trying to make was that they do very little, and there are much more important things to look for when shopping tires.

The tyre rim protectors do nothing for 19 inch wheels. They get torn right off and you feel nothing until the rim itself scrapes that pavement.
Only way to get real protection is get smaller rims with fatter tyres. |
