track day tires

I have been using pilot super sports for the last 5 track day and find that even though the tread depth is still over 50% the grip of the tires is dropping off. One of the tracks I go to has a significant amount of right hand turns with a carousel, and high speed sweepers that really strain the left side of the tires. Iím running 38-40 PSI hot and have not had any major tire chunking yet, just tread migration and the occasional small piece separating.

What is everyone else running for track days?

PSS aren't track tires. Evo v12 even less. From streetable track tires try: Hankook RS4, Bridgestone Poneza RE-11, Dunlop Direzza ZII....
If you want to save the outer edges on your tires from excessive wear on track you need to install camber plates.

Hankook R-S4s will literally last forever. Even after they've heat cycled out, you can pull pretty quick laps with them and they will last. forever.

You can ruin extreme performance summer tires like the R-S4 if thereís not enough neg camber. Adjustable front camber plates a necessity as your driving technique improves on track days. Borrow or buy a pyrometer to see how much neg camber is needed for you.

you can also usually see if you arent running enough camber based on how much its going into the sidewall (usually on more aggressive tires that stick )

Last year I used RS3 and decided to move up to NT01 in 2018. More grip, but since I donít have the power of the N54 and S65, had trouble bringing NT01 up to optimal temperatures. Did 12 track days (47 heat cycles) and still have circumferential grooves/no cords showing. Plan to return to 200TW tires for 2019; probably RS4.

How old are your PSS, that may play a factor. Try lowering hot pressure to 36/37? PSS are great in general, even better in the rain.

I went from PSS to RE71R, another great tire as well.
