I started hearing a a slow clicking noise at the left front fender well with the car idling in Park. It is slow and steady and only occurs when the car is in Park. It is not related to engine speed.

When I put the car on a lift and dropped the under tray, I found the noise was coming from the upper transmission cooler line. When you follow the hard line to the front of the car, you could see the rubber hydraulic hose connection to the cooler move/pulsate each time the click is heard.

For the rubber line to move, I am assuming there is a change in flow or pressure. Again when the car is stationary in any other gear than Park, the condition goes away.

Is there a solenoid or relay that could be causing this situation? Any other ideas?

The noise is not related to engine speed. Nothing is coming from the engine area. Using a stethoscope, I can hear it from the upper transmission cooler line when looking at the drivers side of the transmission. The hose that is pulsating with each click is up at the cooler.

This is literally the exact same issue I am having and my BMW shop has never heard of the issue neither has my tech friend - does anyone know what the cause is or if this has been resolved?

(Yes i realize this is from 2015 but can't find any other post on the issue)

This is how I diagnosed the problem:

I have noticed when the car driven for a while and then parked while still idling (Transmission on either Park or Neutral) .. I hear a clicking noise. and if I shift to D or R, the sound disappeared.

My 2009 328i with the GM auto does this also. I'm thinking it is related to transmission cooling, seems like fluid gets pumped through the cooler when it clicks. Mine has 34,000 miles. Seems to only happen when in park.

Thank you so much. Mine has very low mileage 46,000 too

I am not sure if this a concern or not, as the way this disappeared is to shift and drive, Like as I said (D)rive or (R)everse.

I have what appears to be a similar problem. Here are the attributes. I have a 2010 328i XDrive:


1) It is a consistent ticking sound. It is not affected by the throttle, meaning it does not get faster or slower with engine speed

2) It happens in all gears, park, neutral, normal driving

3) It is not coming from the engine. I believe it may be coming from "under" the car or towards the rear

This may or may not be related, but a few days ago, as I was coasting down a hill, it felt like the car was seizing up and trying to brake all on its own. The car felt like it was shuddering a bit. It only happened while my foot was off the gas and I was coasting downhill. Also, when I would brake while this was happening, my brake pedal felt hard.

Again, don't know if that part is related. I'd just be happy to get the ticking sound addressed.

Any ideas?

I haven't noticed this ticking when cold. I'll pay more attention to it within the next few days, but judging how it seems to do it when hot/idling, and another poster commented on cooling hose movement, I really think it has to do with the transmission cooling, and not anything necessarily harmful. My transmission seems to function normally otherwise.

Maybe other members with the GM transmission can chime in? I've never noticed this on my 325, but that has a ZF transmission.

I was also watching a youtube exhaust video for a 328 and heard the noise in that person's video.

I own a 2008 328i and hear the same clicking noise you all are describing when in park when the car is at operating temp, I have the GM transmission and the cars at 98k miles, I'd assume it's normal then?

This was explained elsewhere many years ago in another BMW forum. The ticking noise is the pulsing line pressure in the GM6L45 transmission cooling lines normally heard in Park. I have 267,000 miles on mine and everything still functions normally.
