Cobb AP - ran good for a few days, now "engine malfunction"

Hey All,

I got my Cobb AP last week and installed the Stage 1 Sport Tune without any issues. The car ran great for about a week, but one morning on a cold start the car had a really rough idle and I got the "engine malfunction" error on the idrive screen.

I took my other car and when I got back home a few hours later tried again and the BMW started and drove with no issues.

Yesterday I had a similar problem again with the rough idle and the warnings. I tried completely uninstalling AP to no avail. I then waited an hour or so and re-installed Stage 1 Sport and the rough idle went away. I went to start the car this morning though and experienced the rough idle again.

None of this was a problem prior to the Cobb install, so it's obviously somehow related, but I found it odd that uninstalling did nothing to fix it.

Any thoughts? I recently replaced all spark plugs (not coils) so I'm thinking of starting with new coils but I don't want to spend the time doing it if it's not necessary.

I had Cobb AP and was on Stage 2+ before switching to MHD. The Cobb maps are outdated and it made my car drive like crap with misfires. I think they stopped supporting the platform. It's better to switch to MHD or JB4. I regret buying Cobb.

I have ran JB4, JB4 + Cobb BEF, JB4 + MHD BEF, and MHD only. The most consistent and powerful of all of these combination was the JB4 + Cobb BEF. If you want to be flash only then yes, sell the AP and go MHD. If you're considering the JB4 see if you can find someone that has the Cobb BEF file before purchasing MHD.

This is my opinion and it is probably the unpopular one.

It certainly is an interesting finding since both Cobb and MHD are both just tools used to change data in tables used by the car's DME. The difference is MHD has access to many more tables than Cobb does.

Did you use the COBB AP to read the codes to see what was stored? I had COBB on my car before switching to MHD, and I never had any issues with it. I used the Stage 1 sport map for about 5k miles before installing a DP and FMIC and flashing Stage 2+ sport, which I ran for about 3k miles. Either way, MHD might be the better bet, but theres also the chance that the issues will still be there with the MHD tune as well.

I'm not sure if it is due to lower load or what but timing was much cleaner and consistent when running with Cobb.

I uninstalled Cobb and purchased/installed MHD. Still have the same problems

Codes:

2EE0
2EE2
2EE9
2EFE
2F00
2FA9
36BE

I cleared/read it several times and eventually just was getting 2FA9 - Combustion miss, cylinder 2: spark duration too short

I'm going to swap out the coil pack today/tomorrow and see if that resolves the problem. The spark plugs are bosch with less than 1000 miles on them so I don't think that is the problem.

Update: put a new ignition coil in cylinder 2 and everything seems to be back to normal. Either way I switched over to MHD based on everyones comments

Thanks for the help!
