What engine do you have? How many miles?

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

What codes does your reader currently display?

I’d pinpoint if the code is related to intake or exhaust, swap the sensors, and go WOT. Run the scanner and get the new codes.

If the code then switches to the opposite position, intake/exhaust, it would indicate a problem with the sensor itself.

On amazon, only go with the actual BMW dealerships or warehouses. I tried a couple of non-BMW ones and they threw codes out all day -- I actually changed mine when they were still good at 75k, but wanted to start fresh to make sure that wasn't my hesitation issue. ie, I didn't have a code before I put the non-BMW ones in. It's worth a little more money to buy the OEM ones, IMHO.

I got these about 6 weeks ago and they've been working great so far. At that price point I was willing to take the gamble as I already had a unconventional 2A87 code and figured I'd risk $25 vs. $150+ for an OE one, not even being sure if a new solenoid would fix my problem. Sure enough it did.

Could you possibly detail your problem specifically? I'm chasing down a hesitation that could plausibly be VANOS related, but I'm not convinced and I want to avoid spending too much money replacing working parts.

I was having a recurring 2A87 vanos error code. Swapping solenoids didn't make a difference, it would come back on the same side despite a different solenoid. Logic dictates that it's not the solenoid but another internal issue then. But everything else seemed okay, the next step would've been to check cam bearing ledges for wear. Cleaning them only gave a week or two of symptom free driving until the kept happening almost every day. Seeing as my solenoids had over 145k miles on them I figured I'd try the lest expensive fix (aftermsrket solenoids) first before escalating into an internal vanos/cam teardown. So far, so good.

So weird that swapping them didn't change the code, but hey.
