The letter to Roundel by homerunball is nigh on perfect. It's the best and most balanced description I've read. There's been a lot of talk about what happens with WOT, probably because this is more objective than talking about subjective amounts of throttle openings. For my normal driving it's the throttle response with partial throttle openings that matters the most. I now have enough miles on my July 08 build / Sept delivery car to be sure that when warm it takes a few hundred revs to build boost. Boost drops immediately too once the throttle is backed off. This is different to my experience of my turbo cars back in the 80s/90s, with a big turbo it was possible to blip the throttle to get the turbo spinning before an overtake, then at the right moment to start the overtake I'd have good throttle response. With the N54 small turbos this doesn't work. Anyway, on Wed I should know whether the European V31.1 helps or not - I'm guessing the US and European versions differ in some way.

The version v31.1 in Europe has update in DME respect v29.2, but sincerely has turbo lag that didnīt have before 29.2.

Respect that v.29.2/v30 or newer have the same torque, I am not agree. I think than between 500-3500rpm have less torque and response.

I currently have 30.0.2 - the car was delivered with this. I'm hoping that 31.1 will improve the lag. Maybe I should not set my expectations too high.

I had mine upgraded from 30.0.2 to 31.1 (E89X-08-09-520) a bit over a week ago to try to cure this problem. Since then I have been doing a few tests and the throttle response seems a little bit better and the lag time has come down by a few 100ms, but it's still nowhere near as it was pre-29.2. Knocking off a few 100ms is a step in the rigth direction, but there is still far to go when the lag is ~1-1.5 sec.

Also the exhaust note is still as loud as it was on 30.0.2 so no change here.

just had service 10/09/08, sa said i have 29.2, that the latest is 30.01. but has many bugs in it. some of the radio's , mirros, , seat setting, etc. get messed up. sa checked there site (bmw/sevvice) they said the next fix for the 30.01 will be out in a few weeks, and it will address the current electrical problems.
sa said i shoulg wait till the 1st of the month, and he will up date my 2008 335xi, which has sunroof problems. when i read over the sa's shoulder it made no mention of a turbo lag fix. so i'm not sure if it will make the fix or not. my bmw feels more like an electric throttle lag then a turbo lag. the 2 small turbo's seem to spool up pretty quick. so i'll repost when i get the new software around the 1st ov nov.

good luck

Got my car serviced recently and since I didnt frequent the forums here for last couple of months I was unaware that dealership update the software whenever the car comes in for a service and guess what....I GOT THE DAMN UPDATE ON MY CAR....IT SUCKS BIG TIME!!! Damn! the car is just not the same....CAR sleeps in the 500-2000 RPM range, and that feels like either I am too old or the car is a Corolla...hell, I guess a Corolla has a better response in that RPM range now....TOTALLY DISAPPOINTED! BMW engineers could not get any dumber than this! What were they thinking? "Lets take away that push in the pants feeling from the 335 owners and they will start looking to trade in for a M3?" Thats the ONLY possible LOGICAL conclusion I can reach at for this damn update...that car was jus fine with the previous version.

Disappointing...I'd hoped for at least a halving of the problem.

It feels better and I can hear the blow off valve a lot more than before, so give it a try and let us know what you think. Boxter also said that he felt it was better, but not as good as it was pre 29.2.

My biggest concern when I picked up my car was that the exhaust note had not changed, if anything it had probably gotten louder.

Anyone here speaks German? If so, can you get us the "contact us" e-mail off of the German BMW web-page and let's start e-mailing them w/our de-tuning problems instead of incapable BMW NA. Perhaps they will be more responsive to hundreds of e-mails from affected customers demanding their ultimate driving machines get a "fix". Also, include your personal ordeal in dealing with BMW dealerships in the US and the infamous BMW NA. Don’t forget the class action too …

it always does stuff like that, didn't you notice? on the 1000 page threads, it'll sometimes be 2 or 3 pages ahead.

drive by wire lag can be tested very easily. press on the gas in neutral. not nearly the same lag as when in 4th gear at 2,000 rpm. that's how you know its turbo lag.

Sorry to hear that man. Thanks for venting here, but take that gusto and call BMW NA right away, and write them. Then call your dealer and speak with your Service Manager and your Service Advisor. Pester the hell out of them and make yourself heard. Go to this thread if you want easy info on the phone # and email page to write on:
