Drag Radials

As 275/40/17 Drag Radials are the largest and most common size tyre used by BMW's at the drags, I thought I would list the ones that are available and the specs from the manufacturers.

Mickey Thompson ET Street S/S
- Recommended Rim Width: 9.5"
- Section Width: 10.9"
- Tread Width: 10.9"

Nitto NT05R
- Recommended Rim Width: 9.5"

From what I have read in comparisons between these, the M/T and Hoosiers are fairly even in traction but slightly better than the Nittos. However, the M&H are better than all of the others.

lol I meant cheapest wheel option. Can you find cheap 17 x 9 steelies? I read heads of fully hektik commodores do it

All of the 275/40/17 Drag Radials listed above should give adequate traction for our cars. There are a number of Falcon turbo cars running this size tyre at Willowbank doing 1.5-1.6s 60' times and pulling mid to low 10s without any traction issues.

So I take inch 17 inch is the ideal wheel size for drags? No smaller, no bigger, what about wider?

17" rims are the smallest diameter that will fit over the rear brake callipers. With 17" x 40 profile tyres, the side walls are larger which allows the tyre to wrinkle on launching giving the tyre a longer footprint/contact area on the ground and therefore better traction. You can get wider tyres but I don't believe they will fit our vehicles and they are not required because 275 give ample traction for our cars.

Apparently they fit.

Bmw oem largest 3 series wheel in 17 is 8.5 inch.

Only other option is to buy from apex and wait 3 months for 17×9 or 9.5 if they fit

Seriously guys you are overthinking it. Just buy some E90 Msport rims & whack on some M/T or Hoosier 275 slicks, done.
Here is a link to the Msport wheels you will need. Buy a set then sell the fronts to someone who wants to run a 245 slick!

I have some 17x8's 4 sale if anyone needs them.

Exactly! Alot of people wont even need to run a slick, 335i's hook up pretty dam well at the track

I found these 17x8 for a steal at $40 each! Would these fit E9X? Whats the widest drag radial I could fit on those?

The recommended width is the ideal size but all of the tyre brands state rims to be 9.0" - 11.0" in width.

I use 245/40/18" M/T DR and get no slippage and did a 11.3s pass. As I stated above, 275 are the largest that will fit a BMW and will give you no traction issues but if you have a LSD smaller widths can still do the job. Unfortunately, M/T don't sell 245/40/18' DRs any more.

I had a set of those msprt rims that Heath had and Taleb tyres said the 275's would be too baggy on a 8.5" rim (I was worried about possible tyre shake,side wall flex at high speeds) so I didnt use them.

I was then going to hunt around and find some E39 M sport rims which by memory were 17 x 9.5 (these have a different CB size though)

Going back a few years ago I remember heath started a thread/discussion on this and was going to buy the E39 rims but ended up using the E9X msport rims and mounted a 275 with no worries

In the end it was just too much hassle to get to WSID from newcastle and I didnt really get into it...
