Post Your Spare Tire Setup

For those that have ditched the RFTs, can you post how you've set up the spare and jack set in the trunk (or elsewhere)?

Thanks.

I also carry a Conti Confort Kit. BMW assist will tow you to the nearest BMW dealer so IMO AAA is a must since they will tow you to the nearest AAA garage which is in most cases a lot closer than a BMW dealer and many are open late at night and on Weekends,

Tischer compact spare kit here; jack etc. all fit in the compartment under the trunk floor. (Kit comes with a circular piece that allow you to store the jack etc. on top of the tire, but that takes even more trunk room and makes it harder to put things on top of the tire).

The compact spare doesn't eat as much trunk room as I thought it might. The bungees hold it in place (yes, shorter ones would be nicer but I had those lying in my garage) and when I need the full trunk I can fold the seats and slide the forward, then pull it back when done - without having to mess with the bungee hooks. (These have the larger plastic hooks so they never come undone by themselves) I can also access the lower compartment without having to move/remove the tire.

I also have AAA but I live in VT where they can have a 60-90 minute response time, possibly longer if you're out in the sticks as I sometimes find myself.

I also also have a full-size spare (all-season/unidirectional on an alloy wheel, thanks Tire Rack) for trips and just in case, I haven't taken it along yet but just one full-size tire really compromises your trunk usability...

Finally, notice the compact spare is in a BMW Tire Tote. This adds 3HP+ over the generic Tire Tote.

If you flip tire over, the foam tool holder fits right in flush with top of rim....

You can slide carryon bags over top of compact spare between it and package shelf...so you can still pack...if you pack lite...for a long weekend away...
AAA, BMW Assist all sound great...until you get a flat in the middle of nowhere...on Sunday just after noon!....Happened to me on my first road trip after buying the spare kit! I called BMW Assist..they said it would be an hour or more....and asked which dealer I wanted car taken too...so I could sit coolin my jets till Monday morning!...Some "Assist"..but what I figgured would happen...
So I slapped on my spare...limped 50 miles or so (can only do 50 MPH on either RFT or compact spare)...to get my RFT patched and rebalanced for $24 @ Sears (only shop open late on Sunday!)....rolled on home (150 miles or so)...Home late, but at least I didn't miss work Monday..or ruin a $350 RFT by driving miles 'n miles on it.

I have an extra 162 rim with a RF tire on it. Keep it in the trunk with a jack.

I stand corrected, the tools will fit in the inside part of the rim with the "oddments tray". I've flipped my spare over for additional storage but I'm leaving my tools in the sub-floor compartment.

Others have posted videos showing this to be the case.

37 pounds for the tire and jack/wrench/chock (per my bathroom scale, it adds 37# to my weight) - I certainly haven't noticed it in any event.

Funny how the mods move threads like this but so many that have no 3-specific content at all get left in General instead of moving to OT... this really wasn't so much about the wheel/tire itself but how to STORE it, which I thought was perfectly OK for the general forum.

I was also going to be a smartass and suggest that this was a pretty creative full-size spare storage solution, in Morgan's 320d build thread. But I'll post it here instead now that "post your setup" has been suggested.

(the wheel/tire was obviously being used for weight to keep the CF roof flush while the glue was drying)

..with a crappy scissors jack and breaker bar under the trunk floor. I think I'm going to put a lightweight aluminum floor jack in the trunk instead.

http://www.tirerack.com/accessories/detail.jsp?ID=38 and the AAA.

I am thinking I will use the conti kit and if I can't fix it with that, then I use the hook. If my car is not drivable with the regular tire then I am guessing it would also do the same with a RFT. (which already cost me two rims and one front tire).

I am debating what to do. I dumped RTF's last year. I carry a conti kit but when I had a sidewall failure on one of my Vredestiens in the middle of BFE it did nothing for me. It was a Saturday afternoon and the problem was on the rear tire. Most tire stores in AZ are closed on Sunday so i was SOL. AAA says tire failure on the road is very rare but it did suck. My failure could have happened RFT or not since I have seen many RFT's suffer sidewall failure. I may just keep a tire in my garage as a backup.
