Supposedly a larger 'big bore' N54 TB is coming to the market but I bet the gains are not worth the cost. I also don't trust the company supposedly making it.

https://shop.hyper-racing.net/produc...e-body-upgrade

A whole 4mm larger!

What they should do is a full 100MM TB for the N54 and the manifold to go with it. Not that we can fit 100MM/4'' charge piping

Any reason you put TB upside down?

There's a vacuum line that connects to the stock manifold on the forward side of the throttle body, right behind it. It's a hard plastic line (like the line that goes from the vacuum pump to the brake booster) so it can't bend without possibly breaking. On the N54 TB, the connection for that line faces the firewall so I had to flip it around so it points towards the front of the car.

It's not vacuum line. It's connection to gas tank ventilation. It should face fire wall so you can connect it to vent line.

Ah I see. Maybe I had to modify the vent line connection as mine goes under the TB then comes up to the connection point.

I also remember seeing pics of the TB oriented backwards on the white 128i with the N54 IM and figured that's what I may have to do on mine:

https://www.1addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1451616

But in the end, as long as everything is working properly, I'm happy with the swap!

On the N52 the connection isn't toward the firewall but on the opposite site as noted. When i installed N54 manifold and TB i had to rotate it too

Here is a dyno comparison of the N54 intake manifold vs. the 3 stage intake manifold on the 22RPD stage 2 tune with headers. (no milvs)

Long story short, you trade 7wtq for 11whp, and a wider powerband by going with the n54im on a 22RPD tune. Add MILVs and now there is no loss.

last time i tried i lost much more than that on StageFP N54 tune.

Now I am on 22RPD, that graph is alluring, i may retry it. I should have all the hardware ready to go in my stash.

Looks a bit too good to be true though, but who knows

Has anyone tried the N54 manifold without headers?

I know most folks would have upgraded headers at that point, but I don't want the noise or emissions concerns.

Also don't want to mess with $800 valves that will eventually fail.

Looking forward to completing this swap.

I have a dedicated E90 330i race car, racing in a local series in South Africa.

The performance characteristics of this swap should suit a race car application very well.

I am going to try get the car on the dyno this week to get a "before" curve before I begin the hardware installation and take it to my Tuner to get optimised.

I have recently purchased Bimmer Tuning Tools MSV70 Quickflash and am keen to start understanding some of the maps and tables that govern the cars performance.

I did a virtual dyno stock tune with 3IM and N54 intake with StageFb and 2RPD tune.
The 22RPD is slightly stronger at low and mid RPM. At high RPMs there is not much of a difference.
The car is an e81 130i and all wot pulls have been driven in the same place.

I made some 3D printed N54 Intake Manifold guides instead of doing the DIY on it for anyone who has printer. https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/gadg...for-n52-engine

You should probably detail this was the 3SM vs the N54 tunes for the N54 manifold - but interesting comparison. Why does the 3sm tune make more power up top? Running lean?

It's a stock 130i tune. It's not going to be lean. It is even very slightly too rich at high revs. Also note this, these are 3rd gear pulls. It's over quickly.
For example, in 4th gear, the pull takes longer and this is what I use when I log and look at differences in tune or car settings. I looked at old Logs and with the stock 130i tune and the mixture goes to almost 0.83 in high gears above 6500rpm.

The curves are smoothed, but all curves have the same settings. The virtual dyno only measures time and speed, the bounce of the road and other factors are noticeable in the curves if they are not smoothed out a bit.

I plan to go back to the 3IM setup in a next couple of weeks. I want to use the 3IM setup in winter.
I am using now the new version of N54 tune. A few changes were made to the new tune and it is slightly better than the previous tune I used. I do the same comparison when I swap the 3IM intake manifold back and I also have a 22RPD tune for it.

Need to remember, these engines run a closed loop fuel system, even at full load. Fuel air mixture will always match the target map in the tune. At least until Cat protection kicks in and starts dumping more fuel.

DME measures the exhaust and wil adjust fuel mixture to match target values, in real time. Minor engine modifications will only require small trim changes. There is a limit, if the required trim percentage exceeds the allowable limit, you will receive an SEL.

Stock tunes are targeted Rich above 6,500 RPM.

Just push the ends you are joining inside a maybe 6” section of vacuum line (they should fit snugly inside) and then use some hose clamps to seal it. This is the end result:
I would recommend changing vacuum tubing to fuel line / PCV. You probably will get oil sweating with just using regular vacuum line.
