Low Coolant - only in cold weather?

we've noticed over the last couple of 'cold spells' this winter that we occasionally get a 'low coolant' warning. only seems to come on when it is crazy cold. when it warms back up outside, warning goes away.

Anyone else notice this sort of correlation?

Like just about everything else, coolant contracts when cold.

You're probably borderline on your fluid level and when it contracts it reads low.

Instead of using lights and stuff, pop the hood and check the level at the reservoir (when the engine is cold) and see if you need a top up.

+1

I had this issue when it first started to get cold and my level was near the bottom. Adding some distilled water was adequate and I haven't had that problem since then. That being said, the cooling system is designed be completely contained and theoretically not lose any fluid level unless there is a leak. If this is consistent, even later on, check for leaks. You will not notice a puddle of coolant under the car unless your belly pan is removed or you are gushing coolant from somewhere.
