Today I rear ended someone
Currently going through the insurance process, lady pulled out in traffic causing the car in front of me to slam on their brakes thankfully everyones ok but damn definitely a sad day. Just thought I would ask you guys how bad of damage do you think this is? With labor and paint costs I'm somewhat worried this could total the car, is that a crazy or realistic thought? Headlights still work fine and the car felt fine mechanically on the way home, airbags didn't deploy and there isn't any fluid leaking. Any feedback is greatly appreciated, hope everyone's day is going better than mine

If you're gonna create a thread like this you better post some pics so we can assess the damage. Do you care about having BMW genuine body panels and parts or CAPA certified body panels? Or are you ok with any aftermarket brand of body panels?

Highly doubt its totaled considering airbags didn't go off, M3 style front bumper, some new kidneys and that hood could be fixed, possibly new crash bar. Id say $1500 after paint and everything if you dont go with a new hood

I was very relieved to see the headlights working after the accident, hoping that my radiator survived as I just had to replace the damn thing

Seriously though, good time to go for a m sport or m3 style bumper. If it wasn’t for a front end bender, there’s usually very little incentive to upgrade bumpers. You can look at this as a gift. |

Yeah no apology necessary man, I appreciate the kind words. Never thought I would be the idiot to rear end someone, always thought I would be on the receiving end

I had a very similar accident at the end of last year. Needed 1/2" more to avoid the accident - didn't get it.
To me the damage looked like I needed new grills and a new hood - first 1/2" of the hood was dented. Insurance estimator put a repair cost of $4,000 on it and a approved my local bodyshop. By the end it was $7,500 in repairs. Silly little things like a plastic headlight clip had snapped and that now required new headlight etc. Also note, that this cost was with 'approved used-parts' due to the age of the vehicle (2009). However my bodyshop did a great job of rejecting parts until they got good, nice ones to install. Mainly to save themselves work I'm sure. Most used hoods will have rock-chips that need to to be fixed before prepping for paint etc. I too also thought I would never rear-end someone.... but not a lot you can do when someone pulls into the nice safe gap in front of you as the whole freeway slams on the brakes... |

You really dodged a bullet there with the headlights untouched. These cars can easily be totaled with cracked headlights and airbags. As mentioned above, it should be around $1500-$2000 depending on how they deal with the hood. Add a few hundred for any broken bits underneath.

Not that this would've helped in the OP's situation, but I ALWAYS recommend a dash cam. When I worked claims, many situations were turned from "that person rear-ended me" to "I pulled out in front of them" or "I changed lanes without looking" with the help of dash cams. I even saw tons of fraud where people would pull out in front of someone, then when they stopped would reverse into the car claiming they were rear-ended.

Regarding the OP question about being totaled, my car wasn't after I hit a buck deer a few years back. Jumped out in front of me on a 55MPH divided highway and then just looked at me while I hit it. Image after the incident:
~$7500 to fix, but not totaled. Bumper, headlight, engine cover, radiator & shroud, some hoses, hood, right side fender & liner, and miscellany. Seems like yours is in much better shape. |
