Exclamation Dyno: aFe Pro-Dry S Intake VS Stock Air Box

The results speak for themselves.

Everything else is stock performance-wise. aFe intake had 200-250 miles of break-in before dyno day. Three runs were done with each intake, both hood open and closed (which didn't seem to make much difference with either). The aFe was run first since it was already installed, then I swapped it out with the stock air box, drove it for 30 minutes to adapt, then returned to the dyno.

The throttle response is definitely better with the aFe, as it seemed far more sluggish once I put the stock air box back in, which is there to stay for now. I guess it's easy to confuse throttle response improvement with performance improvement.

BMW engineering is amazing.

A bit surprising that there was a lose, but at the same time, not really since another dyno showed a loss with the AFE too.
Once again, as I've said, just add a $50 K&N drop in to the stock airbox.
Does well enough unless you want to push out more than 360 rwhp.

I got 3-4 rwhp peak gain from just the drop in, and as much as 10 rwhp gain in other areas of the curve.
Others have shown no gain with drop in. But overall, I think 2-4 rwhp peak gain from drop in is normal.

This is one example of disappointing results, and more will likely follow. I'm glad I held off on this intake and other dual cones on the market simply because these systems are flawed in design IMO. I think a lot of buyers really believed that it would gain 27hp

Thanks for putting the time and effort into testing. Your results are what some of us suspected, unfortunately.

Also, I would like to see this kind of dyno comparison done with the oiled filters....

Very unhappy about this. Thank you for doing the dyno though. However, I know some ppl would also like to see dynos from tuned 335i's with the stock intake and then with the aFe "oiled" intake. Not betting on better results, but we can still hope.

If I was the OP I'd contact AFE and get my money back.
If they refuse, show them the dyno and make a copy of their statement of a 27 hp gain.
If they still refuse, tell them you'll let everybody on every BMW forum know that they will NOT buy back their product after an advertisement claim that has proved on a couple occasions to be false.

You'd have to be silly to believe an intake alone could get you 27 hp on this car. Especially since NUMEROUS other intakes that have already been on the market can't get 1/2 that amount either. There is surely nothing so special about theirs that would give you twice what others have claimed. The only thing special about it, appears to be that it's the only one that actually causes you to lose the most power.

I bet many ppl would be happy with +10WHP/10 lb.-ft. RWTQ gain running the aFe intake + PROcede v3 Stage 1 map (as opposed to the oem stock intake and v3 stage 0 map) or JB3.

Does anybody suspect this is due to pulling hot air with the AFE?

Me too. Well, not for nothing. It looks cool. That's gotta be worth at least twenty five bucks.

And THIS is why I waited to see dynos instead of saying "wow that looks sexy" and wasting my hard earned cash. I knew that "27 hp" figure was bull.

I just replaced my AEF intake with my stock air box. I have a helene drop in filter in the stock air box. As far as performance increase/decrease, It feels about the same.

However, yesterday I did some temp. tests with a wireless temp sensor. I placed the sensor between both of my AFE filters and drove the car. The temps reached 140F with outside ambient temp at around 100F. I placed the sensor in the factory air snorket and the temps at 70 mph read within 5 deg of ambient., at one point within 1 degree.

With that said, the factory air box is at least pulling in ambient air vs engine compartment air..... I understand that the turbo compresses the air etc... but at almost a 40 deg temp difference, I feel better with the stock box for now.

I also noted a lower oil temp today driving with the stock air box at 102F vs the afe at 100F yesterday.....

I think either the dry filters are too restrictive or the filters on the AFE kit are too small... Maybe the oiled filters are better... I run the AFE and this is pretty dissapointing...

wow now that i see this, i am probably going to take off my bms dual cones, because if the afe lost power and it uses a heat sheild system, i would belive the bms would have more of a power loss due to the fact that it doesnt have any heat sheild. But perhaps, when i get the jb3, it will be a diffrent story
