Help deciding (335i)
Hey guys this is my first post on here and its not one I want to be making.. anyways I got a e92 2011 335i about 2 weeks ago and 1 week after owning it a mix of bad decisions led to the engine getting locked up.. I tried moving it manually with a wrench after removing the fan and it will not move its stuck on there. I took it to a shop they said it would be 2.9k to take the engine apart and if the problem is too bad I would just need a new engine so I come to ask what should I do because I did have money aside for the car but for a new engine plus installing fees is quite a lot do you guys think I should take it to someone and have them open it up? or just find an engine?
thanks! |

Sorry to hear about that, but what specifically caused the engine to lock up, low oil? Because depending on that you can kinda guess on the severity of the damage, and depending on that you can determine what would be more cost efficient. Just a quick google search and I was able to find some refurbished 335i engines for around the same price as it would cost for them to open it up. But depending on installation fees versus whatever you would have to replace after the open it up, it is kind of a toss up.

Yikes, after the shift, did you hear any specific noises that stuck out to you? Since it was a money shift, it could be a multitude of things you're bearings, lifters, etc.

Just about $3k to determine the extent of the damage(s)? Tow the car to another shop and search for a replacement engine. They want to rape you obviously.

I had my engine swapped twice in under 6 months, one currently in progress lol. If it's 2.9k just for diagnostics, I think it might be a better idea to do a complete swap. That way if it's ef'd up, you wouldn't have wasted that money.
