Playing music around the house
Does anyone know the best way to stream music around the house.
We have iphones / ipad and itunes match so all the music is in the cloud. We would like to airplay it to several sets of speaks in sync in different rooms. Does anyone know how to do this? I thought i had found the solution by buying a few B&W zeppelins but it seems they aren't wall mountable and you can't airplay to several devices from an iOS device! Only other alternative is having my computer on and USB drive connected but this is too complicated for the mrs and my computer isn't always there when she is. Although nearly ideal as you can control each zone individually. Thanks, |

apple airport express.
they are small devices that plug into wall outlets, they work wirelessly and each can be seen as an "airplay" device. you can stream audio to one of them, or to multiples of them in different rooms. you can then use any cheap powered speakers you want, or an existing hifi system in that room. I often use PC speakers, or a cheap hifi amp and bookshelf speakers. In my bedroom i have an ipod dock that has an aux input. I have 3 of them, they integrate seamlessly with itunes and iphones etc |

Err, yeah you can.
You can't airplay video to multiple devices, but you can audio. As has already been suggested, use an airport, or apple tv unit - that's what I do.

You can use a NAS drive on your network and play our music through any of your I-devices (you will need to puchase some app for this).
Have a NAS drive with all Music, Movies, Photos and stream on your phone, IPAD and other devices. |

I use Airport Express units and Apple TVs around the house.
There's also an app, that lets you stream music to an iPod/iPad/iPhone, so you can plug it into receiver as an Input, instead of an Airport Express. |

Jaysus, I don't know how to do even 1% of this stuff. If I want to listen to music in another room, I turn up the volume! Sometimes the source of the music is even round shiny CDs!
OTOH I know how to sleep in, eat lobster for lunch and have a swim at the beach all while getting paid overtime |

Ok the airport express and speakers is interesting me
How do I AirPlay music from my iPhone to multiple devices. I have an airport express and Apple TV already and I've tried sending music to both but I can only select 1 at a time. I know I can do it if I run it from iTunes on the mac and use the iPad and remote app. I just need to run it from my phone to multiple airport express and apple tvs. Do I need a new app to do this? If it works I think I might go for a few sets of the harmon sticks. Thanks |

I was going to suggest Squeezebox as some sort of solution though I'm not sure if it would be suitable. Then I was surprised to read that Logitech have dumped Squeezebox altogether, never to return. My little Squeezebox Boom is one of the best bits of tech I've ever owned.

except sonos is massively expensive, has shockingly poor sound quality for the price, and offers nothing functionally over a couple of airports being run from some kind of apple device.

Sonos is VERY user friendly (even my wife can run it), the speaker units look pretty good and, while not being hi-fi, sound pretty good too imo

B&W have the new A5 and A7 out, far better than the Zeppelin sound wise, well, the A7 is.
£700 each for the A7 and £399 for the A5. I use an airport express into Bang & Olufsen Beolab 6000 speakers. They are active speakers so the airport express plugs straight into them and you are up and running. Also very wife friendly design wise... You can pick them up from around £450 used, airport express £79, job done! |
