Apologies but this is simply untrue.

Using an uncertified oil could void a warranty.

From a technical point yes, however the reality is that not even BMW pours LL04 oil into their U.S. diesels. They use Castrol SLX OE Professional which only states VW 501?? and MB 299.51 approvals. The 229.51 spec at a minimium meets if not exceeds LL04. That is your out.

Just thought I'd chime in and note that my dealer was happy to use the oil I'd brought, I just had to specify a few times that it was in the trunk so that they wouldn't forget.

My brother also had me send in an oil analysis for the Mobil 1 ESP 5w40, and he posted the results on the Bob is the Oil Guy forums, if anyone is interested. I'm not much of an expert on these things, but based on the analysis (and my brother's interpretation of the analysis) the Mobil 1 is a very good match for the 335d.

The oil Tischer sent me (I ordered it using the BMW part number mentioned above) is Castrol SLX Professional OE SAE 5W-30 and it lists BMW LL-04, VW 502 00/505 00/505 01 and MB 229.51 on it. I do not know the qualifications for the non-BMW VW and MB certifications so I can't state definitively that satisfying one of them would or would not prove that the oil also satisfied the LL-04 certification.

Hmm..I guess they updated the labeling? Notice how this bottle does not?

Here is my basis for the MB 229.51 vs LL04. This tool allows you to overlay the specifications. http://sas-origin.onstreammedia.com/.../pc/index.html

Very interesting. LL04 has been added to the bottle. It really bugs that BMW doesn't get the new oil technologies from Castrol. If I remember correctly the SLX in Europe/UK has since been replaced by an Edge Sport, Edge RS, or something like that.

Bavarian Auto Oil Recomendation

Based on their website and magazine - Bavarian Autosport they say the "Best" oil they sell is Liqui Moly Longtime High Tech / SAE 5W-30.
.
.
This is over Redline --- which is hard for me to believe. LL-04 for Liqui.

I would suspect that is just a marketing change. If they introduce a truly new oil, don't they usually just give it a new name and add it to their existing lineup? Sounds to me like the emperor has change his clothes.

I agree. A quick couple of keystrokes and label has LL04 on the bottle.

In fact if you so desire, do a search on retail 229.51 oils and you'll usually see LL04 also on the bottle unless it's a 40w at which only Valvoline has pending approval for a 40w which is already 229.51 approved.

Motul is a little different since the market a 40w LL04 oil but they have the X-Clean line which is VW 507/LL04/MB229.51
