Best fuel system cleaner
Hi I have a 2007 335i and a 2009 740il, ive been using fuel cleaners like redex and slick 50 but have never really felt a difference, I keep hearing on the forum references to fuel cleaner called Techron and previously use to hear things about seafoam. I would like to know which is the best to use, my cars do drive nice but just feel that they are drinking a little too much fuel. Also if either has been used what was your experiences and did you feel a difference after using the products?
Thanks |

I use Chevron Techron as well as only ever filling up with Chevron Gas or Shell if it’s an emergency. If you were to ask me, I don’t exactly think it does much or haven’t felt a difference; it’s more for peace of mind

I don't think it hurts to use fuel injector cleaner but i don't think it offers as much benefit for direct injected cars. Typical fuel injector cleaners are used to clean the injectors and the intake system including the valves. Since the fuel doesn't touch the valves it's not cleaning the most important part of the intake tract...I also don't know for sure but I can't imagine that much can build up in the fuel injectors considering they're running at 2,000 psi...

I use techron full fuel system cleaner (not the injector cleaner) because apparently it's identical to the fuel system cleaner BMW sells.
https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...AaAmX3EALw_wcB I get the techron for $4.94 at Walmart, I use it "just because". Never really felt a difference. It's cheap enough for a little peace of mind. But I wouldn't get it if I was forced to buy it at Autozone or any other chain autoparts store because it's expensive at $8-$9.

if there's something in there that will damage an injector, or the HPFP, no fuel system cleaner is going to do anything about it.

I think when you have fuel injectors that cost $1500.00 brand new, it would be silly not to run a bottle at least 2x a year. I have used techtron, redline and am now using Liqui Moly.

but it's practically useless in a GDI car.
you'd be better off dribbling a little two stroke oil in the fuel when you fill up to lubricate the HP fuel system parts. |

it's ok to use as a maintenance thing.....it wouldn't fuk anything up. I would put a bottle in half a tank every 2 months maybe, and run it fairly hard for that half tank :-)

I look at the modern GDI stuff and treat it just like diesel engine stuff, because for the most part that's all it is, common rail high pressure injection. the biggest failing in all of it is a lack of lubricity in the fuel, which leads to damage in the HPFP caused by scoring. That's why if you get water in your fuel it's all bad, and generally leads to replacing all of it. The HPFP losing lubrication galls and scores itself to death and sends all that trash further down the rail to the injectors. so again, you're better off regularly dosing your fuel tank with a small amount of oil to ensure that the HPFP gets adequate lubrication. There are even several additives from the diesel world that would work great. Stanadyne makes a lubricity additive for their DB line of rotary pumps. That's literally all it does is add lubricant to the fuel. The same can be accomplished with a touch of two stroke oil. |

Is BP (with invigorate) good? It's near my house and I use it 90% of the time. No Shell near me so I almost never use shell. Back in college, I used BJ's Wholesale Club gas. Is BJ's gas good?
