In my E39 M5, I replaced lambda sensors & MAF sensors, none gave codes, but it ran so much better with the new ones

Just tying in with the other thread Rich_D and I are posting on (http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?p=19003530) , filled up with BP Ultimate this time and now the air duct is in place, car driving incredibly smooth and combined mpg showing as 36.5 on the idrive computer with 150 miles covered in first quarter of the tank.

Looks promising!

I've been driving gently for the past couple of days, still the same commuting route I normally take, 104 miles driven, 43mpg actual using Fuelly, not the OBD readout, so that's impressive!

LOL not at all, just intrigued to see what it could actually do if I took it easy, however it's boring keeping that up long term, so will be back to normal again

Long drive down south tomorrow though, so will see how well it does on a steady motorway run, traffic could screw up my figures though, hopefully it's not too bad.

A useful thread for people potentially considering the jump from E9X 320d to 330d.

My 320d's MPG figures always drop in the winter months, my glows are dead though and will be replaced soon, just need to find the time to fit the new ones. It always achieves 45mpg though, so I'm happy with that.

Seen a few posters say on here in the past say the M57 doesn't produce great MPG results around town, especially compared to the newer N57.

If you're managing to hit 40mpg with a map then I think that is a great result.

Ok, update after my long journey over the weekend...

The trip down was plagued with bad traffic, Friday afternoon is bad anyway, but rush hour around Birmingham was a nightmare, lots of crawling traffic and stop/start at times, so b*ggered my mpg, but the return journey on Sunday evening on the other hand was brilliant, so will have helped the overall average.

I covered 509 miles on a single tank, with an estimated range of 71 miles remaining, this worked out as 42.6mpg average over that distance, calculated using Fuelly, not OBD figures.

This was broken down as approx 420 miles of motorway driving and approx 90 miles of A & B roads, with some town driving and traffic thrown in, so that is pretty damn good in my opinion, it would have been even better without the traffic.

For the return journey I reset the OBD as soon as we got on the M4 motorway, over approx 210 miles of steady motorway cruising at 70-75mph, with no traffic or stopping, it showed an average of 51.3mpg!!!

Very happy with that...

Rich_D Thanks for the update looks like you're getting some great economy out of the car

My latest figures... so did a couple of short motorway runs and more town driving until the fuel warning came on, followed by a £20 top-up to get me through until my payday. Carried on going until OBD was showing range down to 26 miles and managed to fill the tank today...

So since the last fill up:

617 miles over 74.02 litres... 37.8mpg

OBD was showing as 36.2mpg

I'm really happy with that! Majority of the mileage done this time with BP Ultimate. Have re-filled with Vpower again this time.

Did a long motorway run today... covered 247 miles in a little over 1/4 of a tank. Range showing as 457 miles to empty and idrive readout said 47.8mpg - as seems to be the case for my car I'd expect the "real" mpg to be a bit higher than the idrive readout so would say ~49mpg

Very happy indeed!

My 2007 E92 330d Auto is averaging 37mpg with I'd say a 70/30 split of town/open road driving. Although I only get to drive it when I'm not at work and my foot is slightly heavier then the wife's.....

It's only done 68,000 miles but did both my stats, glow plug controller, 6 plugs, inlet manifold seals etc when I serviced it last which made a difference.

Prior to the service I'd noticed MPG was around the low 30's and temps were not getting higher than 68 so I knew the stats were goosed. As well as the stats, after removing the plugs, 4 out of 6 were open circuit when I tested them plus the controller was giving a fault code on INPA.

By comparison, my work mule is a 2006 E90 330d Manual box which has done 120k. It received the same treatment re the stats/service etc after buying it a year ago and on a 15 mile commute sat at 65/70 on cruise its recording MPG as 43. I've not done any real world calculations based on brim to brim, just what the car is telling me. However, between each tankful driving like that I always get 500 miles out of a full tank.

The calculated mpg is usually slightly lower than the OBD reading in my experience, but that all vary, either way that's a good figure.

From the last few calc's I've done my idrive always comes out less. Agree though, definitely a good figure. However I can't say I enjoyed driving at 60 and watching the whole world and their grandma pass me by - including all the "wtf is wrong with him?!" looks I got lol

Had to be done though with the undertray problem I had at the time.

My 2005 E91 330d manual regularly gets 45 real MPG over a tank. That is around 80% motorway driving with the cruise set at 70 MPH. The car has had a DPF delete with a 'stage 2' map. The best I have had is 46.6 MPG over a tank which was mainly 90 mile drives on the motorway with the cruise at 70 MPH.

Yeah it's pretty boring and you don't buy a 330d to potter around worrying about mpg, hence why I'm averaging around 36mpg

The fact is they give a very good compromise, performance when you want it or economy when you want it, or a little of both.

Rich, you hit the nail. If people want to save on fuel they should get a 320d and not a 6cylinder.

I got a 335i due to the fact I do low mileage but I really wanted a 330d or 335d. When I did the numbers taking into account I'm doing less than 10k per year the petrol was the best option.

I have to admit I'm a little surprised you guys are not get 50mpg plus when doing 70mph on motorways. Some of you are getting low to mid 40's which is good but I get 35mpg from my 335i. Surely something isn't right. If I do pure town driving I get 22/25 mpg, 30ish if a mix, 35 motorway at 70/80 mph.

I agree the 330d has a good blend of performance and economy especially on a very long motorway journey.

I was expecting on shorter journeys a bigger gap between 6cylinder petrol vs diesel.

The official "extra urban" mpg rating for my 330d engine I.e. BMW's lab-tested maximum is 54.5mpg so I doubt in reality I'll get close to that unless I drive on a flat surface at a consistent 60mph or so with all other components and factors working perfectly in synch.

Let's face it though, that would be hella boring and not why I bought the 330 lol

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding something. 22/25 mpg around town...I get a lot higher than that so I'd say the gap is bigger on a shorter journey? On a mix I'm also getting higher than the numbers you are with the 335i.
What were your expectations?

My car is Pre-LCI so has the M57 engine. The LCI N57 engine is supposed to be a bit more economical.

I've just done a huge amount of work to it including a full service changing every single fluid and filter. I've also removed the EGR, cleaned the inlet, fitted swirl flap blanks, replaced the glow plugs and module and replaced all the boost pipe seals.

It had so many boost leaks so I'm hoping for improved MPG when I start commuting to work again in the new year. I've been driving it fairly hard over the last few days and it's still showing 31 MPG.

Perhaps down to driving style and other losses outside the engine bay area if you think you should be achieving more mpg than that. Have u reset the driver module?

I'm not expecting a huge amount more. Maybe 1-2 MPG more with all the recent work. It is on 164k as well. Before I bought the car I was hoping for mid 40s which it is achieving so I'm happy with that.

How do I go about resetting the driver module? What does this do?

My car is on 162k if that's any help when comparing.

Not sure if you have an auto box but read the guide here, see if it helps

Mine is a manual. My quoted MPG figures are calculated MPG as it tends to over read by 3-4 MPG although on the last tank the OBC was actually spot on.
