It has a lot of miles but as long as you know what to look for it could be a fun car.

It says mechanic owned and loved, so you'd have to pull the thread on that. Being a mechanic, he's probably been through all the M54 issues once or twice by now. He didn't say how long he owned it. Maybe he's flipping it?

The front fender dent is a 3 option deal: (1) leave it alone, (2) see if a PDR guy would take it on; (3) find a same-color fender used, they bolt on - worst get a used fender painted.

I'd bet the driver's seat needs new foam after 280K. BMW probably still sells the seat foam. Or look for a set of the Z4 M-sport seats. I have them in my car, they are excellent seats.

I'd take $500 - $800 off for the fender.

Z4's make for a great roadster the chassis is very stiff for an open-top car. I have a coupe, never getting rid of it.

If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

I'm not one to be scared away from a BMW with high miles. Sounds like adding a car to your fleet would be somewhat of a financial stress? If so, then I'd pass. If not and you want a toy, hell, you could drive it a while then sell it for about what you paid for it.

I'm always wary of people selling out-of-state cars in CA. I see this ALL the time on Craigslist. Most of the time there's an underlying emissions issue which prevents it from passing a smog check. Someone moves to CA from another state and then upon realizing they can't smog their car and register it, they try and sell it locally. However, this ad clearly says it just passed.

Since this is a NM registered car, the seller isn't legally required to have a CA smog inspection done as a condition of the sale. It's as if you're buying from out of state, in which case you're responsible for it.

If he has a valid CA smog inspection certificate within the past 90 days, then you should be good to go.

All comes down to how well the previous owner's maintained the vehicle. Looks like it could be a good snag though.

If he has the CA smog certificate it should be fine. Also that price isn't bad if the car is in top operating condition with no defects, no dents or scratches, no oil leaks, no other mechanical issues.

I'd be curious how much oil it burns but for a 6 speed its not a bad price. If its on the factory clutch it may be nearing the end of its life so keep that in mind.

I'd try to get it for 3k if I was interested
