"Money Shift" is $1,900.

Three weeks ago I f'd up and missed a shift from 5th to 4th at maybe 100 mph. Yeah, I let the clutch out in 2nd. When you do that the motor shuts off and an orange exclamation mark pops up on the display. Also the ground on the crank position sensor melts.
Since it's not my only car I told my mechanic to take his time. I wasn't afraid to buy a new motor, but hey, if it can be fixed let's do it.
He called me yesterday and said he "talked to an old German" and said that maybe the timing gear had spun on the crank shaft. Apparently it's pressed on the crank. Otherwise... horror.

Today the phone rings on the golf course and I apologize to the group. Good news! I'm a bit fuzzy on the details but the mechanic said "the timing chain jumped" and it's reset and runs fine.

I'll pick it up tomorrow.

- Drops $1900
- Not his only car
- Casually states that a new motor install is nbd
- Has a mechanic do all the work
- Was golfing when his mechanic called, who has exclusive contacts with elderly Germans
- Fuzzy on the details; OP probably was on his 3rd Cognac
- Picture of ultra clean E92 in front of a well-maintained garden
- Full battery charge on iPhone
- Sets an alarm because time is valuable to him

You flexin, bro?

Probably not what people mean when they say the N52 can take a beating but hey- if it runs fine, it runs fine. I'd definitely keep an eye on the condition of the oil upon the next oil change- look out for slight glitter, and send it off for an analysis just to be sure that there isn't anything going wrong.

Yes, the sprocket for the timing system is "pressed" onto the crank hub. This is the part that causes the dreaded "spun crank hub" on the occasional N series engine and more commonly, the S55. If it jumped the timing chain, and really didn't spin the hub at all, that's quite impressive. If it spun at all, it shouldn't take too long for the DME to pick up that the timing end stops aren't in the right place. Time will tell if it needs to come apart!

I'd be worried about valve impact if the chain slipped. Check for compression

It probably doesn't matter much at this point. either it's lunched or it's not, if the timing did slip the damage would be done and you'd notice that it doesn't run right (misfires etc).

I almost did this but at a lower speed (75 or so). max RPM was ~7800 (the DME stores this value). it left two marks when the rear wheels locked up. Oops. No issues with the engine though, I didn't let the clutch out all the way thankfully.

I really wish the crank hub came with a key like every other car in existence, though.

The good thing is a solid N52 is about $900 out of a wrecking yard. send it!

Wayne's on Cottage Grove Road. I completely agree with you about Dunn's. They worked on my Audi twice before I got tired of their attitude and high prices.

I just mentioned them to my son yesterday as we drove by. The son, I hear, is a German auto guy.

Reasonable prices?
My daughter lives on Cottage Grove Rd and drives an 08, 328xi E92 which would be convenient for anything out of my league.

Wayne's is less than Zimbrich. If you PM me I have a phone number for a shop near Deforest that I got from my golf group this morning. They take their Mercedes, BMW's and Audi's to him. He's a former aerospace engineer. They claim he's got reasonable pricing and does fantastic work.

Ooof. Gotta laugh at yourself sometimes. It was a pretty good joke.

I'm the first to gripe about non-productive posts/comments, but your OP wasn't asking for info, so really just an invitation to comment.

Hope you get your car sorted.

Lol, “my mechanic is actually an aerospace engineer. Or, they are also sometimes referred to as, rocket scientists”

Op is setting himself for these.

Glad to hear the car is ok.
