Most importantly... As it now appears to be confirmed an oil temp gauge and not coolant, a reading of 250 degrees makes perfect sense.

Also keep in mind what oil you are using. I am using Mobil 1 0w30 ESP at the moment... and after 290F (143C) is goes into thermal shock. So I know I am safe under that.

I have a 2012 328i (e92) with a N51 and I have an oil temperature gauge. Interestingly enough, yesterday I installed a Bluetooth device that sends engine data to my cell phone (similar to the BMWhat app). Yesterday I was driving around monitoring water temperature with this app, and while my oil temperature settled in at 250 F (which is where my oil temperature normally is), my water temperature oscillated between 210 F and 218 F.
I was also impressed with the coolness of my air intake temperature.

On the higher end of what I have seen via the digital gauge on my V1 perf wheel. Generally in the 210-240 range for oil temp.
