adding oil normal?

I've been having to add oil to my 07 335 between oil changes recently. My car has roughly 62k miles on it, and I have a third party warranty. I know BMW says oil changes can be 15k apart, but I usually do mine 7-8k miles. At the 6.5k mark since my last oil change, I had to add about 1/2 quart because the oil level was close to minimum.

I am almost positive I'm not leaking oil. There was even a stretch where I didn't drive my car for about 5 days so I set a piece of cardboard under the car to check for any leaks, and it was clean. I'm not sure if adding oil is normal to these cars, because I've never had to add any with my previous BMW's. There's also the possibility that I'm burning oil I guess. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

It's normal. I carry a quart of oil in the trunk for this reason.

What's happening to the half to full quart in 5-6k miles though? how can that be normal? that's a lot of oil.

Yes, if you are changing your oil after 6K, it is normal to be adding oil. Half a quart after that long is awesome!

You're engine will burn a little bit of oil. Totally normal.

Ok, cool thanks. Since we have the same year 335, how often do you change your oil?

I change mine every 3,000 just to keep the oil fresh. They say you can go 15K but with turbochargers, I wouldn't recommend it. IMO.

5K is the max I might go.

I let BMW do one and then I do one 7,500 miles after that and then let them do one again. So, basically, I do one oil change in-between the BMW intervals (about 15,000).

Normal due to Blow by gas. OCC is a good investment.

Cool, 3k is a little too premature IMO. If the oil is made to go 15k, I normally would change mine out 6-8k because I do drive hard and I am running a JB3. But thanks for all the help and I'm glad to know that adding oil is "normal" for these cars, even though it doesn't sound normal to me. Then again, my previous BMW's never had the 15k oil, I was changing out 2-3k miles.

It's normal. With my previous bmw 2008, I had to add 1L after 5000 km on hot season.

As both my (non turbo) BMWs are about 1/4 quart low after 6,000 miles, I wouldn't worry about your 335i, especially since you have been doing "interim" oil changes.

What kind of oil is everyone putting in? My oil level is low and I'm not sure what type of oil to put in. I have a quart of BMW 40w performance oil in my trunk, can I put that?
