Dnyojet vs. Dyno Dynamics same car, same day

Hey all,

Posted this over at 1addicts, figured those here may be interested as well. As we all know different dynos read differently. This just highlight how much of a difference there can be.

A while back I had my car dyno'd on a dyno dynamics dyno. Pulled 352.3hp/440.1tq. Wasn't sure how I stacked up seeing as how most everyone dynos on a dynojet around here.

So decided to get a pull done on each dyno on the same day.

Compared to my first dyno dynamics pull about a month ago, this time the number increased by a whole 1.2hp and lost almost 9tq. Ended up at 353.5hp/431.6tq. Different days and warmer the second time, so going to call that a wash.

Next up the dynojet (actually went to dynojet first). Well, I was quite surprised. Was hoping to pull about 380ish. Ended up pulling a whopping 404hp/461tq!

I've read the dyno dynamics is a heart breaker dyno, even more so than a mustang dyno. Can't say I disagree. Still, I am surprised there was such a big difference.

Needless to say, I am now fairly confident I am right in the pack for my mods.

Sae correction on dynojet. ATMC1 on dyno dynamics. 4th gear pulls on both.

And you used SAE smoothing to boot. Change that up to STD and I'd venture to guess your Dynojet number would be even higher. Heck, change it to Smoothing 0 STD for even bigger numbers.

FWIW, I did 333whp on a DD and 424whp on a Dynojet back when I had my 135i 6MT. Different days, different temps, but yes, DD's are definitely heartbreakers.

Do you have any baseline runs to show the net gains from your mods?

These were done back in April when it was much cooler out. No before numbers for the dynojet.

the stock run (except for dci) is actually cobb map 0, which I suspect puts out a little more than stock

This was my run from a month ago. Comparing cobb stage2+fmic to ptf tune.

std smoothing 5 = 405.66/462.61
std smoothing 0 = 406.83/466.45

Wow this is interesting. Anyone know how a dynocom racing dyno reads? I dynoed on one and made 391/462 with my tune not being great and misfiring. I'm dynoing next weekend on a mustang dyno and probably going to run E85+meth

Only looked at this one link from a google search of dynocom racing dyno vs. dynojet and came up with this:

http://my350z.com/forum/vq35hr/40554...s-dynojet.html

Seems it reads even higher than dynojet. Though gotta take everything with a grain of salt.

Ouch I hope not. Even those numbers were kinda disappointing for my mods. Regardless I guess I will find out next weekend on a mustang. Gonna do a dynojet too in a month or two

Edit: Actually the dynocom I was on might have been right. Looking back at my graph my baseline was 275 which makes sense to me for xi and my mods

This is awesome. Thanks OP!

How would one calculate DJ numbers based on DD results? Would be via a simple ratio or is it a bit more complicated than that?

Just curious as I've pulled 300kW (400hp) atrw with stock turbos, FBO and straight meth and wondering how that compares to the 460+hp values that the flex fuel mod did on Joe's car

Dyno dynamics and mustangs depending on the calibration can read very different also.

I have a good friend who baselined his evo on 2 mustangs. 1 of them is arguably the lowest reading in the states. 1 he dynoed at 198whp and the other 240.

It's a helpful way to compare numbers but unless its on the same dyno comparing 2 dyno's are useless.

I would say your 400whp DD pull is equal to approximately 430-440whp on a Dynojet.

Question, do you have the rear cats on your midpipes still or is the car catless?

I'm pretty sure those #s are taken from an engine dyno that bolts directly to the engine.

I wish I had a DD pull of 400. The DD pull is 353. The dynojet pull is 404.

Well, in my case the DD is reading about 13% lower than dynojet. Not sure if you can use that as a constant though. and of course different cars, different dyno's (even if same brand) will give different results.

The local dyno that I use is a Dynocom. Based on my experience: at the ~450whp range it reads about 25hp lower than the numbers my car put down on the same tune on a dynojet. However, take that with a grain of salt because you can pull off of one DJ that reads 430whp then drive across the street and put down 415whp on another DJ.

Companies don't quote wheel horsepower. So if you have seen someone post that a stock m3 puts down 370whp, best thing to do is get you car on the same dyno and see what it puts down. Or at the very least get a pull on the same brand dyno, but even same brands will put down different numbers.

Purpose of this post was really just to illustrate how much of a difference there can be between dynos. They are a tuning tool.

But still, it is fun to say I have 404whp, even if that number on its own is somewhat meaningless.

Fwiw, this guy put down 350whp stock on a dynojet.

Interesting. that guy saw about the same 12% lower readings that I am seeing between DD and DJ.
