Costco Oil Change
Just wondering if anyone has had a oil change done at Costco and how your experience was. Apparently they use Castrol fully synthetic oil, and its $50. That is pretty damn cheap, any one try it?

Don't think they use the European Castrol. So it is not for our car.

Hmm I did not know that the European Castrol was different than the North American.

Not sure about Costco but my buddy's mom got an oil change done at Wal-Mart. They drained the differential fluid instead, topped off the engine oil and let her drive off.
Differential was toast. |

In 5w40 form I was able to get it at Canadian Tire and it met BMW's LL-01 spec. I just did my first oil change on this car with this oil and BMW filter.

Well the LL-01 rating is just to meet the ridiculously long oil change intervals BMW used to post as safe, ie. 25k km's per oil change. If you go with any other standard oil that isn't LL-01 rated you are more than safe using it, I just wouldn't try and push it longer than 10,000 km's.

I usually change my oil once a year now, I drive about 15k per year. I use Lubro Moly 5W40, which is an LL-04 oil. Never had any issues.

Yeah I knew there was something different about LL04, and that it's not backward compatible with the LL01 spec, but in this case I'll just judge quality based on price

LL-04 has a stands up better to the high sulphur fuels we have here in NA vs. the LL-01 that they have in Europe.

If you wait for 15k to change your oil I would recommend to stick with LL-01. |

i guess you'd have costco do a heart transplant as well.
Some thing in life you should never cut corners on. the extra 50 bucks at a real shop might actually be worth it. Geez. |

Oil change is one of the least expensive maintenance repairs. It also plays a vital role in the longevetity of your engine and car performance. I won't go to Costco. For $79.00, the dealer is where I'm taking it.

In Toronto, I used to buy the oil (Maranello discount for like $70) and get an independent shop to do the oil change for $20 (Ivo). |
