To: Anyone with the N54 engine in their car...
Hi Guys,
I would like a few minutes of someone's time who has the N54 engine. Doesn't matter which series, just that it's the twin turbo N54 (stock turbos). Recently i've been adjusting the wastegate actuating rod on the aft turbo to try and reduce some of the rattling that most of us N54 owners know so well. I've increased the rod length, decreased the rod length, many turns, just a few turns, etc. While I did manage to reduce the rattle, I've messed with it so many times that I don't know what the original length was. I know they are all going to be a little different, and really it should be set using a vaccum pump on the actuator, but I just need a baseline so I can see how much shorter or longer the rod is compared to stock. So, if someone can please go out to your car, pop the hood, and count how many threads are showing up to the adjustment locking nut, I will be extremely grateful!! It's on the aft turbo, so it's really easy to see, so again, just the number of threads showing on your particular car. Hopefully I can get more than one respone from my request, and take an average. I think it will also be interesting to see how much the length varies from car to car, series to series, and year to year. If you guys (or girls) can spare a few minutes of your time for a fellow bmw owner, that would be awesome!! Thanks in advance!! Pic 1: General area of the turbo's Pic 2: Looking down on the passenger side of the engine where the turbo assy's are Pic 3: This is the wastegate actuating rod for the aft turbo. I've adjusted this so much that now I don't remember where it was initially set at!! So, just the thread count from where the threads start to the stop nut. Doesn't have to be perfect. Just what you can see from looking down on it. Thanks guys!!! Much appreciated!!!

Pretty please with turbo's on top? Just need a quick thread count so I can establish a baseline!! I don't know anyone else with an N54. I guess I could take a trip down to dealer and see if they have any older N54 powered cars down there. It would just suck to drive 30 miles round trip for something that would take 5mins. Help me out here, guys!!!

Too hard to count from above the engine cover. I like the picture idea.
I was able to get a caliper down there within 1/2 inch of the actuating arm. I measured 19.05 mm from first thread to the nut. For reference I have upgraded actuators from turbo replacement due to rattle, but I have not adjusted since and I have no rattle now. You can also try sending a PM to someone with a set for sale such as Dzenno. Good luck. |

Pictures are up on the first post. If you just want to take a close up of your actuator and post it to this thread, that would be great also!! Then I can compare to mine and count the threads also. Thanks for the help!!

This is as good as I could get with iPhone and extremely hot engine bay.
2008, 47k, turbos/wastegates never had any work done.

I counted 27-28 threads looking at the picture above. It was too hard to count the whole actuator but there are some sections I counted and measured with a caliper and then applied to the entire distance with algebra.

@happy4nk8er - No, that pic was taken in Prescott, AZ. Found a nice little spot in the woods, and the sun was just going down. Love Prescott!!!
Thank you very much guys!! Awesome information!!! Now I can go check and see where I'm at compared to stock. Here's a little info on what I've found so far from changing the length of the actuator rod. If you lengthen it, boost will decrease. If you shorten it, boost will increase!! If you go to much in either direction though, it has negative effects. Especially when you shorten it and increase boost. Thanks again for your time!!!
