It is a gross waste of cash. I bought it and since you are stuck with 15K oil changes and for CPO they make sure the brakes are good. The chances are that you will never go through the $2K that the maint costs. You are better off putting the $2K in the bank and paying for it out of pocket. IMHO.

THis is from a gu who has forked over the $2K and probably will never see a decent turn.
Helpful opinion, much appreciated. I was planning on using part of my bonus for the peace of mind and paying for it. That 2k can be better spent on paying my car down or banking it.

i brought this to the attention of a bmw service department and was basically told to go fuck myself. granted, this was about 3 years ago, but i was almost positive it was wastegate noise and got the whole 'this is normal' routine...

maybe with this action i can finally get rid of the noise. i've almost gotten used to it at this point...

it probably rattles like a tin can by now.. you should be able to take it into any dealer with the SIB, and tell them to fix this. You'll probably get new turbos!

One of the main reasons I got rid of my out of warranty N54/e90 was because of the concern I had over the turbos. I took it in for an A/C issue and came out with a $5,500 estimate which scared me but the fact that one of my turbos was starting to whine pushed me over the top. Since I didn't want to shell out the $5,500 plus have to replace turbo(s) in short order, I traded the car for an f10 535i. Don't get me wrong, I like the 535i but I loved my e90. Had I had this assurance, I would have kept the car. Son of a "b"..!!!!!!!!!!!

Go figure, Im sure our founding fathers would've like to change this one.

This is pretty recent news since it was made in July 2012 just last month. This means that if anyone of you ever get turbo trouble, fear no more because the dealers are more than happy to fix it and give you new turbos free of charge.

Sorry about those who arent in CA. Maybe you can open a PO Box and change your residence address to it to qualify.
Plus our injections are covered up to 5/70,000 miles because of a special extended California Emissions Warranty

1. it will basically rattle itself to death and then become loose to the point where boost won't be created.

2. it'll just rattle so loud, it becomes "abnormally" sounding to the point where neither you nor the dealership can't deny that it isn't a defect.

or

3. it'll just rattle/break and then cause under/overboost.

some people got new turbos with the new wastegate rods, some like me, just got the wastegate rod fixed. The new wastegate rods are of thicker design. So far, they are holding up great and I got no death rattle.

BMW/Mitsu beefed up the wastegate actuator arms from 6mm to 8mm in the Fall of 2007.

I believe BMW AG saw this lawsuit coming miles away and prepared themselves. I think how they prepared themselves was very smart. First, introduced the N55 engine immediately into the 2011 line-ups in the existing E90 models. Secondly, for those wishing to have N54, since there was technically still a prized market for it, introduced a secondary model called 335iS. These two changes completely eliminated any legal liabilities with regards to turbos, wastegates, or injector issues since the majority of the class action lawsuit was being represented by N54 owners in the 2007-2010 years.

As such, unless there is a class action lawsuit representing N55 or 335 "iS" owners, they are all out of luck. The same goes true for the HPFP as the HPFP warranty extension does not apply to N55's.

So...does this covered failed turbos, or only failed turbos caused by faulty wastegates?

I am a bit on the ignorant side of the variety of ways a turbo can fail, so that might be a dumb question.

Has the N55 been affected by any turbo issues like this?

I know my dad's N54 equipped 535xi has already had the turbo replacements due to waste gates and he had paid out of pocket. Wonder if he can file some sort of claim with BMW Canada and get his money back now?
