Anyone car being shipped from South Africa?

It seems that most of the cars are being shipped from Germany yet mine is being shipped from South Africa.

Does it go to Germany then to Los Angeles?

Now that I think about it, it might go from Germany to South Africa then thrue the ditch onto the west coast. I have no idea what I'm talking about but sounds logical. When did you order your car?

Rosslyn cars are shipped direct. I don't see why they should be shipped back to Germany and then statesside. Rosslyn cars are definitely a minority here. I see you have a 335i on order, I think that is a new development. Traditionally only the 325i/328i E90s were manufactured in Rosslyn. All E91s are built in Munich (and I believe all xi models) just like all E92/93s are built in Regensburg.

I ordered my car Jan 4 and finished on the 15 and sitting waiting for the train or is on a train which is a long way from the port.

From what I have been reading the new body styles in 2011 for the 3 will all be made in South Africa. If anyone has ordered a 335 sedan check to see if it is made in South Africa I guess that is where they are now coming from.

Wow maybe this is a method that BMW is trying to reduce the $ vs Euro currency costs by shipping more S. Africa cars to the US.

The Rosslyn plant capacity is about 75000 cars a year of which 55000 are for export of which 25000 are shipped to the USA. And its the sedans only.

I'll be going on a factory tour next month, so hopefully can post some more details.

Do you know what port the cars are shipped from? Right now it is at a port awaiting a ship.

I have also read that when the new body changes in 2011 that the Rosslyn Plant will be doing all 3.

Just like 328i's, they are started to make 335i Sedan's in South Africa as well as Germany. I would tell your CA you want a new car, as a 335i SA will take about 2.5 months to get here. They take something like 50+ days on the water.

edit: that is why you purchase from board sponsors =)

Actually it's another reason to do ED. You know your car will be built in the motherland for sure.

When you say "Motherland" do you mean Vaterland?

Haha after reading 50 days on the water I managed to find my VIN # on the OC and the first letter on my Vin of the 7 digit code is A. A= Munich which i believe is Germany. If cars are being built in SA and are on the water for 50 days. Any customer that orders a car should get a German built car. If a dealer is placing orders to fill their inventory then SA is fine. Just my .02

I will keep you posted as to how long it takes to get my car here and see if it see really fifty days. It only took my car to be built 6 days from the time I ordered it Jan 4 and now it is at the dock waiting for the ship. True it has to travel farther then those on the east coast.

That's very true. There is an underground rumor among dealerships that SA cars are actually more reliable and have less problems than their German twins

The Rosslyn plant has one of the highest quality ratings within the BMW manufacturing network and won the 2002 JD Power award.
