You know, what, though? Despite being trans not being a joke, many, many people make malicious jokes about it, including on this thread.

Many, multiple studies have shown that transgender people, IF they receive proper treatment (including transitioning) AND have accepting family, friends, and acquaintances, have a suicide rate that is pretty much exactly equal to the rest of the population. However, when denied treatment due to transphobic laws and insurance companies, and when surrounded by people that think being trans is something to joke about, and be malicious about, the suicide rate of trans people quickly rises to the 41% you often see quoted.

To be fair, while I believe that suicide is personal choice, and only the person considering it has any power over it, there is no doubt in my mind that bigotry, discrimination, hatred, and malicious 'jokes' such as this, and others I have seen on this thread definitely contribute to it.

So, tl;dr, take your transphobic jokes and shove them so far up your fourth point of contact that they come out your mouth.

Thank you for speaking up and sharing your story. I have a family member who recently announced that they are trans. To say the least, its been an adjustment for me to think of them in this new identity. The family is very supportive but we occasionally goof and call them by their given name and use the wrong pronoun when referring to them. We are trying our best and they understand that we are new to this and that we are pretty ignorant, if I'm being honest, about their feelings and what they are going through. I am so proud of them for giving us a break and allowing us to learn how to unconditionally love them in this transition.

That said, I think your attack on the person who posted the joke was pretty brutal and over the top. While I am supportive of people who are trans, I am still not and probably never will be totally understanding of what it is to be trans. It will take time, generations possibly, for society to come around. I think it would be a mistake to automatically label people as exhibiting bigotry, discrimination, hatred, and maliciousness. It could be that they are simply ignorant and lack understanding. While unfortunate that we all just don't all get it and act sensitively and appropriately, expecting immediate understanding and acceptance is probably unrealistic. Attacking those who appear offensive through lack of understanding or ignorance is not going to expedite anything.

Well said, it seems that there is little we can joke about or laugh at anymore without fear of offending someone. I have worked extensively in the gay (LGBQT2 etc) community, I don't know their challenges but am aware of many of them. I too appreciate your service and you decision to identify. I think in some respects many identifiable groups do themselves a disservice with their response and over the top offence when they feel slighted or offended. Peace.

Then, uh, why don't the folks that sell the car take these items off if it's required as part of the sale?

Side note, that's ridiculous that that isn't allowed. I have a permanently mounted system that holds an iPad for navigation. Because it isn't on a Crown Vic this is somehow allowed? Plenty of folks with aftermarket lights installed on their vehicles without issue. Something isn't adding up.
