oil change question?
I put my 335 away for the winter and changed the oil before parking it. I didn't change the oil filter because I didn't have one and figured it would be okay since I like to change my oil every 6 months regardless what BMW recommends. Just wanted to ask if anyone thought it was a bad idea to change the oil but not the oil filter. Would this put over the max for oil since I put in 7 qts and yet there was still a little oil left in the oil filter I didn't replace? Thanks. I also use Royal Purple 5w30.

If I were you, I would just go buy a new OEM filter and change it before you start driving though. And since the filter is right on the top of the engine, it shouldn't affect the volume of oil in your engine or anything and it will be a 2 minute job to change it. So go change it! |

yeah you should be fine....but again I would change that filter before waking her from hibernation. And like others have said it is only a 2 minute job...so it's not a pain in the ass.

It does imho. I also feel it's not necessary to change the oil for the winter. Just do it at any point where the vehicle is going to be driven. Synth is expensive, at least to me, no need/reason to waste it....

I heard from experienced mechanics that you're better off changing the filter than the synthetic oil if you had to do one over the other (if done within the recommended change interval) as the synthetic oil doesn't break down and its the contaminant in the oil that you really worry about. I think changing every 6 months is a bit on the overkill. I try to change mine every 5k depending on my driving. But if you are adamant on your regiment, change the filter with the oil as the cost of the replacement oil far surpasses the price of one filter. |
