Lol, I know this thread will attract the flamers but I'm just curious as to whether the airbag would actually seriously go off. I doubt it would, there must be a shock sensor somewhere....

done it before and seen lots of others do it at the dealership. New cars really arent much concern..however older cars (e46 and down) I would recommend doing it. Ive seen corrosion on the inside of the steering wheel surfaces, especially cars that live down by the beach (we arent that far from there), and that would cause some concern, god forbid some corroded part shorts out.

I was. Quit and work for a better independent shop.

If you trigger the door locks shut and let the car go to sleep, the voltage at the airbag went to 0 after like 6-7 minutes. Disconnected it, and probed it with the meter, still read 0V. So I went about my business and put a new airbag in...takes less than 30 seconds usually.

Usually I will put the car up the lift and perform a 22 point inspection while waiting for it to go to sleep....by the time I finish scoping out the car its quiet and I can get down to work...it cuts time down by still keeping you seat settings, your radio stations (you would be surprised how many people get really pissed off when you have one preset that isnt right or their seat is off by an inch)

Went I went to training down in SC at the Performance Center, my teacher told me nothing will happen usually..they leave the message on the back as a liability concern to cover their asses incase you do something stupid to trigger it. We set it off in the back of the shop once, launched a bag of concrete and a bowling ball like 30 feet in the air lol.

Well it looks like the question was already answered, but I was talking with my SA when I brought my car in. I was telling him how I installed the Mtech wheel and he asks how I reset the airbag light. I told him I disconnected the negative battery terminal before doing the installation. He said well yeah that makes sense, when we do it here we just remove the airbag and take care of the faults later. So I assume that would mean it wouldn't explode in your face.

I pulled the bag on my e34 a few times in the course of figuring out a squeaking steering wheel. I have no idea why people even think it's plausible that disconnecting the ignitor will cause it to blow.

You disconnect the battery before pulling the bag so an SRS fault isn't stored. Airbag deployment doesn't enter the picture at all.

You could tap the front bumper against a pole or something at, say, 10-15 mph. That should get rid of the pesky airbag for you.
