I spend too much on my car and it's definitely your fault.

Dear e90post members,

I write this with a furious anger and a bittersweet melancholy demeanor. I have decided that my addiction of putting money into my car is your fault. There are many reasons for this. You perpetually bid me to join you in buying and trading parts - this spiraling relentless orgy of parts. Parts that beget more parts when parts break. Parts for my other parts. Better more fantastical parts. You are enablers. You mawkishly encourage my disdain for other, more economically reasonable brands of vehicles. It is sophistry. Your fanaticism knows no bounds. When I contact any one of you to discuss an upgrade to my car or one I have for your car, you are deceitfully pleasant and glad to talk to me, passive-aggressively thoughtful, and horridly enthusiastic. A ruse. If I learn something about the car, you're all there like gadflies on roadkill to sap me of my knowledge, and therefore my happiness, leeching my new found understanding. You leave me no room for so many other productive hobbies, like clay pottery. And finally you're all here to make my wife leave me for a gardener or a carpenter or, again, a clay potter, because while she sees the result of my foul vice, me under the car yet again, having spent another paycheck, she knows nothing of you. Nothing of you lurking, silent, anonymous masses underground, planning your next upgrade. Cretins, scoundrels, maniacs. You all should be ashamed.

Hey, take comfort that you didn't have my situation:
Buying and installing a new complete pumpkin Wavetrac LSD, new clutch & flywheel, new Michelin PSS, sway bars, using it for 1000 miles and then have a ******* restaurant valet (who didn't even have a US license) take an illegal left and t-bone my baby. Oh yeah, and my car only had 23k miles.

And to think we didn't use any lube....

So rude we are.

If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

When you say spend too much, is that relative to your income, or the value of the vehicle? I would say if relative to the value of the vehicle, that's ok (say a 2007 335i is valued at 10k, just changing the tires is a lot relative to 10k). If income, and you're a family man, stop it!

I call it enabling behavior and forums like this are a great place for positive re-enforcement. Cheers!
