Make sure your tire pressure is correct.

Is your car standard or sport suspension?

How many miles on the shocks now?

I had 70k miles on my standard suspension and the car felt "floaty". I went whole hog and upgraded to the BMW Performance Suspension (springs, struts, and shocks). Definitely no float now.

Yep, I'd change out the shocks & struts plus all the surrounding hardware. Bilstein or Koni.

So you bought used oem BMW sport springs? Do they come up for sale or did you buy from the dealer?

Do you want to just replace it with a similar suspension, or do you want to add some sport to the suspension. If sporty is a thought, do you want to go all out or just give it a boost?

Go with Bilstein B4's. With all the surrounding hardware, you are probably looking at $400.00 for the shocks & struts & $200.00 for the surrounding hardware. Lemforder is primarily the OEM provider for the surrounding hardware. On some items, you might have to buy BMW and therefore pay the BMW tax, but in most cases you can avoid the need for the little BMW Sticker and get the exact same item for a lot less.

You'll need:

1) strut bearings
2) bump stops for the front
3) spring mounts for the front
4) upper, upper shock mounts (rear)
5) bump stops (rear)
6) upper lower shock mounts (rear)
7) lower, lower shock mounts (rear)
8) spring mounts (upper & lower)

This is a basic list; there's probably something I forgot.

BMWfans is your friend 😉.

Use this website to look up exact part numbers and make a list.

If you are in south Florida, the heat & humidity is a b@itch on anything made of rubber on your car. Don't hesitate on changing out parts made out of rubber, which are supporting hardware for suspension of the car.

In about 25,000 - 35,000 miles or so, I'd be changing out front control arms, rear control arms & bushings in the rear subframe proactively.

FCP Euro will give you a lifetime warranty on all of your parts.

Ok, I hunted for years on how to improve the feel of my E87 118I. I did the complete suspension and still it felt floaty and nervous on the road. I recently coded it for the M-sport suspension and now it is the way I always wanted it to feel. The set you bought above will make a huge difference but it will never have the true solid feel until you find a coder and code the M-Sport suspension retrofit via ista-p.

tell me more about suspension coding. AFAIK there are only mechanical bits in the whole suspension setup. What would you code? Thanks in advance for excusing my ignorance.

The coding (from memory) adjusts dtc, DSC, and steering as far as I know. I think it was one of the single best mods I have ever done to the car.

Unless you rally race the car I doubt the suspension is worn out enough at 90k miles to feel floaty.

What kind/size of tires are you running? I bought my 328i with 8 year old run flats and they were horrible. I could feel the back end getting floaty at certain speeds. I replaced those tires with snow tires (which are soft and squishy) and the difference is night and day. I'm sure in the summer when I put on performance tires it will be even better.

That really depends on the types of roads he is driving on a daily basis. Pot hole filled roads woo wear out a suspension in 75 to 90,000 miles no question.

Atlanta blew two of my shocks/struts completely within 90k and wore out a joint in a tie rod. Bad roads be bad man.
