runaway diesel engines

I never knew about this finding it interested. Hope some of you find it interesting and would love to know if anyone has ever had this happen with their prior diesels.

I had a TDI before my 335D and after 196k miles my turbo finally gave up the ghost.

What ended up happening was the turbo seals gave causing a leak into the engine and a massive smoke screen after a few seconds. I turned off the engine (under 10mph when leaving a parking lot) to stop the potential runaway (Oil is like diesel engine nitrous!).

A new turbo a few weeks later and cylinder/ intercooler purges and she was good to go.

How did you clean your intercooler?

I removed all the turbo pipes and intercooler and cleaned them with a degreaser. With the intercooler, I further had to verify with a flash light and guess work whether I was able to get all the metal pieces out. (Turbo wheel exploded, throwing shrapnel into the incoming side of the intercooler.)

In total the intercooler had about a quart of oil pooled. Diesel intercoolers by default will accumulate oil and I'm not sure how long it had been since the last draining, however that would have been ounces of oil we're talking about.
