Thanks to the OP and all others for their software contributions and knowledge. I retrofitted a CIC iDrive system into my non-iDrive 2009 328i last weekend and it still had 2009 maps. I just updated it to 2020 maps using the 1b hex downloader, FSC generator and 2020 maps from another thread. It's like having a new car!

The following is by far the easiest and most convenient way to pull your 1b file from your car and generate an FSC update code for your BMW CIC navigation unit (at least for me) and I haven't come across any other method that is easier.

Tools required:

-one usb stick.
- 1b.zip: Attached below.
- “bmw_cic_fsc_generator.zip“: Download Windows version from https://drive.google.com/file/d/1lW0...ew?usp=sharing or directly from Jaeger's thread http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1453464
- Maps.zip: Attached below.

“1b.zip” contains the files necessary to pull the 1b file from your car via USB, “bmw_cic_fsc_generator.zip“ contains the FSC generator (a big thanks to user Jaeger and I hope he doesn't mind me using his generator as my preferred choice for generating fsc codes) and “MAPS.zip“ contains different map versions covering the most popular regions (North America, Europe and OZ/New Zealand).

First step: Pull 1b file from your car via usb stick.

1. Unpack the ZIP file (1b.zip) to the root of an empty USB stick
2. Power on your car (ignition on is fine, you don't need to start your car) and wait until the navigation system has started completely
3. Put the USB stick in the USB port in the glove box (do not use the usb port found in the middle console).
4. Wait for around 30 seconds
5. Remove the USB stick from the port in the glove box and put it in your (windows) computer
6. Check if the file 1b.hex is present on the USB stick (if not go to step 2 and try another USB stick). The file should be exactly 319 bytes in size and you can check your file by opening it with a hex editor such as HxD https://mh-nexus.de/en/hxd/

Second step: Generate your FSC code using Jaeger's FSC generator

1. Unpack the ZIP file (bmw_cic_fsc_generator.zip) in Windows/Mac (after unpacking wait for a couple of seconds for the generator to automatically download the file Lookup.xml")
2. Open the FSC generator by clicking on "BMW_CIC_FSC_Generator.exe" and select the 1b file you pulled from your car as described above.
3. Select desired map type, region and version to generate your code.

Last step: Download desired map version and install on USB stick:

1. Unpack the ZIP file (MAPS.zip) and click on your desired map version (make sure you have a bit torrent client installed) to download it.
2. Put the downloaded map on an empty USB stick (just make sure it has been formatted using fat32).

Plug the usb stick containing your downloaded map version in the glove box of your car and switch your ignition on. After a couple of minutes your CIC will prompt you to update your map version. Just enter your generated code and the update will commence automatically.
That's it, you're done and good to go!

Big thanks again to Jaeger for his excellent fsc code generator http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1453464.

Update: Maps.zip now contains a direct torrent download link for north america premium 2018-1 which supports both updating via dvd or alternatively via usb stick.
Works perfect, just did update from 2019-1 => 2020-2 :-)

I'm in an E90 with the North American Premium (2013-A1) maps and no matter what I do (after reading this and multiple other threads on how to use the 1b.zip file), I've struck out with three different USB sticks to pull the HEX file.

I've got the CIC version with the checkmark. All USB sticks were formatted FAT-32.

Is this a Windows thing?

Edit: I get "the navigation data in the car is incomplete or manipulated" error when I insert the USB with the pkgdb folder in the root along with the config.nfm file. The first time I put it in (this is sounding way dirtier than I intended), it prompted me to upgrade to the 2021 Premium before spitting out the error above.
Is your car retrofitted?

Vin number?

Nope. Stock head unit. I've upgraded the maps before with no issues.

No matter how long I leave the USB connected in the glovebox, it just doesn't pull the 1b.hex file. Tested yesterday on Windows 10 and it just shows the two files from 1b.zip as it does on OSX.

I must be doing something wrong.

VIN is A265083.

Crap. Do you know if there is another way to extract this data? I've had codes generated for me before based on the VIN, so I'm gathering there is a way to do it.

Does your CIC have a hard drive?

Or does it use DVD's?

Hard drive. It's a post-LCI build produced in late 2008 for the 2009 model year. Currently running 2013 Professional maps.

You should be able to use the Econ cable to retrieve the general persistence data file.

However in your shoes I would just pay for a code since that would be quicker and simpler.

Thank you, opjose!

I'm curious if just buying a code would solve the issue I created by starting this process. I now get "the navigation data in the car is incomplete or manipulated" error when I insert the other USB with the pkgdb folder in the root along with the config.nfm file.

The first time I did this, it prompted me to upgrade to the 2021 Premium maps before spitting out the error above. I didn't even make it to the point where I could input a code.

The map data on your USB drive could be corrupted. Make sure the size on the USB is the same as the size of the unzipped maps on computer.

I suggest you download the maps again, and then copy them to the empty USB drive (or try a different USB drive).

P.S. When you unplug the USB drive with maps, does your Nav system work with current maps (2013)?

Yes, it does, bcoz. Totally normal operation.

I've already downloaded the maps twice, completely erasing a 32GB USB and a 128GB USB multiple times to copy the files over. It still spits out the error.

What maps do you currently have installed? (use iDrive to find the map version and year)
If PREMIUM, then this is the right thread.
If NEXT, then you'll need to search for NEXT map updates.

Just worked perfectly for me. Cost me $6 for a mega subscription for a month so I could download the latest maps (nobody was seeding apparently) but other than that everything worked great. Thank you all for such a great service. my nav has been useless for years because some of the major roads near me weren't even built yet when I last updated (2013) I should have checked in sooner figuring some enterprising soul would have figured this out

North America Premium 2021 maps
