How much would it be? $5000? The weight saving must be some 10-15lbs?

To be honest I would not be surprise if it's more than that. Your talking about recutting the steel structure that is holding the oem hood first of all, then remaking it. Alot of work. Better to just put the carbonfiber overlay. If I get ichy maybe i'll look into this more but surely it will not be worth it.

The sunroof itself weighs approximately 50-60 pounds, so I am not sure why anyone would think the roof between a 335i with a sunroof is only 15 lbs heavier than non-sunroof M3 with CF.

If one is to truly start doing such modifications to obtain something the factory offers in a variant model, AKA M3, I think the person should just purchase the M3 in the first place.

Well the one reason why someone would do this is cause it's the idea there 1 of 1. But definately a pricey convergent.

As you can understand from my posting, I'm very conscious when it comes to having weight at the ROOF level. Doesn't make sense at all. So, no, I don't have sunroof ruining my center of gravity and thus for me the difference cannot be more than some 15lbs, but I'm willing to pay for getting that 15lbs off my roof.

Overlay would add the weight, not decrease it. Having an overlay would be plain stupid.

That is out of the question, since M3 lacks the turbos. I need to have turbos. At least one turbo being the minimum number. I also want to have the carbon fiber hood without the powerdome, because I don't like my car to resemble a car which does not have FI. I will have twin exhaust (not quads) etc and I do everything that my car is considered a proper FI car i.e. 335i. However, the carbon roof is functional and I would consider painting it white if the paint would not add the weight. I would hate my car to be considered M3 wannabe.

Are we ruining our handling by decreasing the weight? Arent we upsetting the 51/49 weight distribution?

Or is the weight savings not that much to upset it?

The change in weight distribution is really not enough to drastically change the handling characteristics of the car. The car will benefit from reduced weigh through faster acceleration and increased agility however.

Just a bit of information...there is no such thing as colored carbon fiber...the silver carbon fiber that every thinks is carbon fiber is really fiberglass with an aluminized coating...it's called texalium...

and yes they would be happy to increase their margin by providing a cheaper material in your hood...and still pass it off as carbon fiber...

The warp that you refer to is called "print through"...you can't get around it...the only way to get around it is if the manufacture put a veil cloth prior to the layers of the fabric whether carbon of fiberglass...this creates a resin rich layer that reduces print through...but since most of you guys like to have the carbon shown you can do that as it will leave a cloudy surface finish...so you can't have it both ways...

I spoke with Vorsteiner about this process and they actually use a real Carbon Fiber base with a silver coating so you still get the same weight saving benefits as the standard color.

why did they decide to not make the dvwp version with cf vents? i'd imagine thats the most popular version. plus cf cost more to paint
