I read on some thread on here that the E90 monitors oil state and driving patterns and adjusts the miles to next oil change accordingly.

I got my first oil change at 4200 miles. My service indicator is showing the next oil change to be at 12,000 miles (another 1000).

So I'm wondering if I just drive it too hard because I can't have contaminated the oil so quickly.

I generally don't drive it too hard except for the occasional on-ramp spirited merge, traffic light launch etc.

how did you get it to read that you'd need an oil change at 12,000

mine didn't request it till 17000 miles and I didn't get a break in oil change

From what I gathered on previous threads, the service interval is based solely on how much fuel is consumed (660 gallons to be exact).

So, if you drive like a nut and burn up fuel like crazy (eg. lots of track time), you'll be looking at an early oilchange. And if you drive like a grandma or on lots of highways, your oilchange will be longer than usual.

i used to think or was told once by some bmw technician that 'lead foot , burn rubber 'drivers need more regular oil change-= computer signal comes on at more frequent intervals.

just change your oil every 5,000 miles.....

then you don't have to worry about some computer telling you when it's time....

That is correct. When I went to get my recall done, the head technician of the green team was telling me that i had like 18k miles before my first oil change, and he was saying that I was doing mostly highway driving, which was very true.
