DPF Clean
I have removed my cars DPF e90 330d and was wondering whether to buy a new one or have it professionally cleaned.
Has anyone had theirs cleaned and would you recommend it |

I image it's much cheaper to get it cleaned. I hear cheap new (pattern) dpf's don't always last too long. BMW must want a fortune for a new one.
Did your car have a fault causing g the dpf to clog or is it a high mileage car? |

I have not checked BM for a price yet, but imagine it to be expensive.
This was my sister in laws car, 98000mls, she did mostly short journeys so probably not regening a lot. I have changed both thermostats as was only getting to 75c so this may have been the cause, did try to force a regen with software but no joy. |

Did you properly clear all the fault codes before you tried to force the regen? All codes need to be clear. Sometimes you need a passenger to clear the codes for you as they pop up as you drive, then you can get the regen to to start.

I guess as you have the DPF off the car already it would make sense to have it professionally cleaned as that will clear the ash buildup out too and give it a longer in service life. As its already off the car, it might not cost too much as there will be no labor fee for removal and refitting to the car.

Looking around I didn't fancy doing it my self so decided to get it cleaned professionally.
Took it to a place this morning and got it back 5 hours later, looks as new. Was told the coating they put on the outside would burn off once it had regened so have to keep an eye on it. For anyone thinking of taking it off be aware it is not too complicated a job, having a scissor lift in my garage was a bonus. The longest part of the job was grinding the 8mm screws off of the underpinnings which were just lumps of rust, will probably grind all the other screws off and renew. Hopefully, get it back up and running once the new gaskets and clamps arrive. |
