Background, had a serpentine belt shred and found I had an oil leak.

There was obvious belt debris between crank and block. I decided to drop the subframe and do pan gasket and check pan for belt. Found a couple pieces of belt, pick up tube was good and buttoned up the pan with new gasket. Also pulled the valve cover and found 1 piece in there. New gasket on valve cover and buttoned that up.

While down the subframe was dropped, I put new silicon inlets on. Also did the crankshaft seal and used gasket maker on the 2 keyhole areas.

I don't leak under load, had it on stands running and revved a but no leaks, take it and put good load, cone back and oil spray on the bottom. Crank is dry and not dripping from there. Top half dry which tells me not oil housing gasket. The drips are mainly by the front inlet bracket and between water pump and crankshaft.

At a loss on this leak.... would a vanos leak be obvious down the block? Does that leak only under load? TIA

Just as an update- It's definitely not the Vanos nor Oil Filter housing gasket, those areas are dry, I cleaned them and ran again, still dry.

I did not use the BMW gasket maker nor primer. I used carb cleaner and an off the shelf gasket maker, can this be it?

my old n54 was using old at 1qt every 1500 as it got older. New owner said it was an oil fitting on side of block.. still not sure what that might have been.. but I dont think they are on the intake side..

He said they found it with dye.

I'm at the point of using dye, but good thought to chase any fittings on the block. I checked my oil drain lines from the turbos and those are dry as well...thanks

Might just be the gaskets setting in. Same thing happened to me last month. Changed VC, VCG, and OPG in the process of removing belt from the engine.

Put it on a lift a week later to check. Major leaks stopped but still had some fresh oil. I wiped it up and checked back a week later....all dry.

Taking it around tomorrow, hoping that's it. I thoufht the same about the gaaket maker aetring up around the key holes on the crank seal. Just bought a bottle of UV dye to trace the leak if still leaking.

Update, I put in Dye to trace the leak.... saw oil running down in several areas of the block. So I changed the filter housing gasket, cleaned up the front of the block took it for a ride and same thing, oil all over the front.

There is also a good amount oil on the driver side of the block above the pan that I noticed just now.

Changed pan gasket, valve cover gasket, crankshaft seal and oil filter housing gasket.

What would cause leaking on driver side of block?

Another update, changed the oil cooler housing gasket, should've done this when the filter housing, and also put new Orings on the lines....still oil leaking down the front of the block... Still chasing the issue

Any new on the oil leak? Chasing same issue was supposed to work on mine today but we had a snow storm ☹️

I know there is a chain tensioner above what you are talking about. Check out the Vehicular DIY video on YouTube. I doubt it but it's a hole with a threaded object in it. It can leak.
