Problem with the reprogram is that just because it doesn’t work doesn’t mean there couldn’t be some other issue lurking. But with the hardware replacement route, if it doesn’t work, you know for sure it can’t be the DME (or CAS, tho this wouldn’t be the issue). And best of all, you could re-sell the unneeded hardware. Absolutely you’re right that maybe they put up a fuss over the cloned DME. I wouldn’t actually be surprised because hassmaschine has explained in other posts how you cannot actually clone an MSV80. As you know though, we’re at the point where I can no longer explain the why, and more just chip in my opinion on what I’d do.

Have you shipped the car off to Texas?
Sending on Tuesday.

Hello friends, the car has arrived in Texas, will keep you all posted.

2011 335 xdrive
On another note, does anyone know if the e90 n55 and the n54 FMIC are interchangeable?

This is the exact car I bought, it now has 110k miles, but it is still immaculate. will take pics later.
Original owners didn't do any mods, not even the window was tinted, which is awesome.

I though you had done this!? I’m a little skeptical, but hey, I do hope it continues to work!

Are you saying he re-programmed all the modules using ISTA/P?

Very interesting. I could have sworn you had re-flashed some modules, but I guess not all of them hey?

Keep us posted for sure. Fingers crossed!

Well that's reassuring that it didn't just disappear.

And yeah, I didn't check the weather in Texas and couldn't remember where you were either

I hate to say it but I was very skeptical that simply reprogramming modules fixed this seemingly unexplainable issue. Of course I’m not celebrating—I’d rather be wrong on this and have the car working correctly—but like Tambohamilton, I’m happy for you to the extent that you didn’t dump a car that just needed a quick re-flash.

Any idea what your friend plans to do next?

Thanks for keeping us posted on this too!

So here is what he surmises thus far.

1) The car seems to have a power drain to the point that terminal 30g is shut off overnight.

2) The bucking issue does not occur if he fully charges the battery ( Proven False)

3) He charged the vehicle overnight and drove for 1 hr then tested the voltage, and it dropped to 80% of capacity.

.

So he’s saying it doesn’t occur with a fully charged battery, but you’re saying that’s not true?

Yea that theory was later disproved. It happened even on a full charge.
I'm confused as to how he was able to drive for a whole day after the re-coding of the modules without incident. It's almost like the system re-learned and reverted to the previous state.

Update.....

The problem is still ongoing. My friend says it's something electrical in nature because he notices that the blower motor cuts out momentarily whenever the car bucks.

Finally a resolution

The problem was actually caused by a faulty coil. The theory is that the coil issue was intermittent, and when the problem occurred, it would cause a temporary short across the ECU which prevented it from logging the code.

My friend was able to recreate the problem by changing the faulty coil and then reusing it.

This completely missed me because there were no codes related to a coil or any idling issues.

I miss that car so much. My 335i automatic is not as much fun driving as that manual 328xi.

Thank you all for the help!

Damn man, what a simple fix! Can’t say I totally understand how that would have caused what you experienced, but all that matters is that it’s fixed now.

Manual swap the 335!

I have a general question....
I have ISTA /D /P working on one harddrive. However, I created a clone of the drive because I suspect that the original drive may die soon. The clone drive boots up perfectly, however whenever I open ISTA /D it asks for License Key which I entered from the text file. The clone asks for a license key at startup but keeps saying the one I'm entering is incorrect. Even stranger, my original drive crashed and I restored it from the clone that was asking for LIC Key and it works fine. I suspect that the installation is somehow paired with the drive it was originally installed on. Does anyone know of a workaround? I would hate to have to install it from scratch. Thanks in advance.
