Yep, just had to buy the MHD flasher and got the maps off of the BMS post. It was pretty straight forward

Does MHD require an andriod phone?

Yes, it requires Android, but does not have to be a phone. Can be a tablet or VM install if you are technical.

I use a $40 amazon fire 7 and it does what I need. There are definitely better options quality wise.

I guess I will do the same. I really have no need for an android other than for the BMW.

Considering people pay $1000 for a proprietary device solely for flash tuning some cars, I say buying a cheap android device gets us off the hook pretty cheap.

I bought the tune device for my last car used for $300 and that was a steal on an $1100 new unit.

I do MHD, BimmerGeeks Pro Tool, xDelete+ and XHP from the same $40 device and $20 cable, they stay in my glove box. Works for me.

No. You use the JB4 BEF specific maps.

Gotcha, I believe i saw that last year when i purchased my maps and installed the MHD.

I am a little hesitant, because my JB4 ended up frying the ECU not physically but did create issues since it is a piggy back and had to be removed.

Symptoms were unexpected shutdown or power output degradation.

Since then ive been a little scared of putting back the JB or any piggy back at that, and going to a Full flash.

So then which device would actually be running the map?

The JB4 is passive so it can't damage your ECU. Did you have the normal MOSFET failure? Or what was the ECU issue?

I cant recall, it was 3 years ago and ended up just not driving the car, dealer had to reset the ECU, no charge so it wasnt a ploy.

And the car ran perfectly normal. Decided to not drive the car for a while until last year and decided MHD.

If anything every fails with JB4 they offer a 5 year warranty to the orignal purchaser, and a new control board (basically the heart of the system) is only $175, if you wanted to update it. There are a lot of great benefits including the free maps. Just depends how far you want to take the car.

This is good to know, and def allows me to be a little more easy about going this route.

5/19/18 UPDATE AFTER MHD PUMP BEF: Editing this post because this needs to be said. A few hours ago I did the pump bef via mhd and all I have to say is: My. God. After a little driving and giving the car time to re adapt map 5 and dial everything in, I am in shock at the difference this made. Responsiveness, smoothness, faster spool + a couple more pounds of boost, and the car throws me even further into the back seat! If anyone ever is on the fence about doing a BEF, there is no reason to wait or debate it. The outcome is UNREAL! Couldnt be happier!

Where do you get a BEF from for n54? And how does it install etc

Go on N54tuning.com. Maps are there on Terry's page. Download the correct one for your car and then you need to flash it using an android tablet with the MHD tune and an OTG cable with the DKAN cable or however you spell it

Is there any benefit to doing the backend flash if you're just running straight MHD Stage 2+e85 or a custom MHD tune? I understand the benefits of if you are just running JB4 and need MHD for the DME, fuel trims etc.

The JB4 can be used with whatever flash you want. It's a tuning tool.

Wireless logging to your phone, in dash gauges, on the fly boost changes, advanced safety systems, E85 auto tuning, 2STEP/NLS, WMI control, etc, are among the many features.
