When I was 16-25 I drove a 1988 Oldsmobile Delta 88 with VTEC sticker.

After getting my Harvard MBA in 2007 I made my first big car Purchase Honda Fit Sport (I still use this car as my commuter car)

I'm frugal and I know cars are a big waste of money and depreciate in value but my dream was to own a BMW so I recently bought a used E90 as weekend car. BMW is better investment than women for sure. Gotta enjoy life so I bought the BMW and I don't regret it.

Someone who has a good education is in no hurry to blow money, more importantly, he has connections that mommy and daddy cannot provide, and means of creating lots of things (jobs, opportunity, processes, etc.). With your education, I bet you don't buy the finance 100% and invest the money instead way of going through life. funny, you only hear such talk when markets are rising. When they bottom out, those folks are hard to find.

my bmw was not my first car... it goes in this order
-99 toyota avalon
-85 corvette
-02 gti
-97 camry
-09 328i

and i work as a smog tech making a between 2700-3500 a month, i figured i pay for everything except rent, so i wanted a nicer car i could afford 400 bucks a month payments and thus i found my car.

Anyway, it doesn't really matter. Even if you don't invest in the stock market, there are still piles of other stuff with marginal utility > $400-600. And I don't even mean investments at all, per se. Lots of fun can be had for that.

And shit, if you shop around well enough you can find CDs with better than .9% APY. Point stands.

Ya good paying job for me (25), I actually didnt have license or car till I was 21 and had my good job. Working at kfc before that didnt cut it for car payment etc not to mention rent haha.

My dad worked for motorrad bmw dealer when I was younger so I always been around bmw's hence the fondness I suppose.

When people are on the winning side of a trade, or so-called investment, they tend to boast. However, there's a big difference between gambling, and investing.

To tell anybody, to "not" put anything down on their car, borrow at 0-1.5%, and invest the money instead, is gambling. If a person buys a new car every 6-7 years, after 4 cars, there's a good chance this strategy put them in a world of hurt. The S&P has been on a tear for over a year now, and yet that only brought the 5 yr. up to 5.5%. That's like saying a baseball player batted 1000 for an entire season, yet all it did was to bring a 5 yr. avg. to about 1/2 of what people used to expect.

Sure, you can simply open an online savings at Ally and get 0.0084. The idea is more on whether you are offering sound advice, or not.

Most people do not have the options available to them, that wealthy people do. As a general rule, they should save their money, and avoid debt. What I suspect, however, is that there is a reverse mortgage mentality, where many people actually don't have any goals nor do they expect to ever pay off their debts or mortage. then, it becomes live for today. Look at how many people simply walked away from their underwater homes, and in 2 yrs. all will be forgiven. In my grandpas day, that would be embarrassing. Today, it's funny. And a perfect example of using leverage.

Easy test every 25+ y.o. should ask themselves rhetorically: Are you putting 17,500 into your 401k? If you qualify for a Roth, are you doing an additional $5,500? If you answer no, you better figure out how you can answer yes. If you answer no and you're driving a BMW, well, then, life is for you to enjoy.

Most people are probably like, what's a Roth? One of the best investment tools allowed. I know plenty of people get scared socking too much money away in their 401k since it almost can't be touched.

I'm not advocating removing money from an etirement acct but it makes it easier on people if they know they can take money out of the Roth at anytime they wish without penalty as long as they don't withfrawl any gains.

23, worked in finance industry since 18. Was nice enough to have worked with extremely knowledgeable Investment Advisors, taught me to get a investment leverage loan of $200k pre-2008 market crash and guided me to the right investments. After crash I came out with 21% return when everyone else is in the red. Immediately bought gold certs even when people were chanting it was overpriced at $900+ ounce, you know where this goes... basically doubled my investment. I am extremely lucky to have had good acquintances and friends, took a gamble and leap of faith.

Came out of University, got a good job. Right now I am a investment advisor myself. Own a small condo (aint cheap where I live sadly), a dog, multiple project cars including 86' mr2, 90' rx-7, 94' nsx, and my DD e90 335i.

OP said 17. If you're out of college you should be able to afford car payments. Find a 17 year kid that paid for the car himself, and then you can be an asshole over the Internet.

My bank paid me to complete a degree through university. I graduated last year.
