I am working on it. So far I found good prices in sweden for the wheel. Everything else is on sale (sort of) at Tischer BMW...Should be around $800 after CCA discount.

I think I have confused them there. My guy at Towson feels I don't need all the parts I thought. So, now I don't know what to get. I noticed someone else parting out their wheel, but I think I'm 3rd in line. Sucks!!! I kick myself daily for not getting ZSP in the first place. Well, at least I can drive Clarese's with the sport wheel...

OK. I took the big step of ordering all the parts I need. Wheel from Sweden, everything else from Tischer. Let me ask you this: (Frank, please chim in) Towson (my SA) said NOT to do this yourself, as the replacement multi-function switch has to be coded. Is this true? In reality, they are asking $200 to do the install, so not a huge deal if it's necessary.
Thanks guys

For cars with sports package, there is no coding to do. I don't know about going from non-sports wheel to the M-wheel. I suggest you find, in this thread, others that have done that and ask them if they had to do any coding. I can tell you I pretty much read this entire thread before doing my mod and do not remember anyone mentioning coding the car.

Jason only does parts. I'll likely ask someone from service.
Let me know what he finds out. Check your PMs. I was talking to Bavarian19 about your situation.

Help with multi fuction bottons
I just received the new M3 tri-color wheel complete airbag bracket etc. The multi function bottons of the wheels right side are different. Instead of radio and recirc. the are M and star bottons. I am going from the standard non sport wheel to this. Do I need a new set of bottons? Help. I may have the dealer to the install, they only want $ 99.00. Will these bottons control my recir. and radio? Only they will be mis-labeled. Thanks!

I believe they will be only mislabeled. I can't imagine changing the steering wheel cover would change this.

be mislabeled. I guess if you want them to work as the new ones, you will need coding done at the dealer. Just my guess.

i noticed an interesting problem with the track change buttons after installing the wheel. For some reason the track change up/down arrows are a lot softer than the other buttons..i.e they push in very slowly and retract slowly... has anyone else experienced this ? what could it be ? dont necessarily want to take the wheel off again : ( to figure this out.

hmm...weird...that's not the case with me. after the steering wheel swap...all the buttons are fine.
maybe you should disconnect the battery...and take the wheel to inspect if it really bugs you...probably only proper way in diagnosing it. |

yeah, it was definatelly buggin me a bit.. i just took the airbag off and re-attached all the cables, one of them (the black one from the buttons) wasnt in the clip that holds it in place.. once i put it there the buttons work well now. strange, maybe the airbag or the buttons were crunching it.

Ok. Another question about swapping the non-sport wheel for the M sport wheel. On realoem.com, the m-sport wheel (and the regular sport wheel for that matter) has a "connecting line" that appears to plug into the airbag. The non-sport wheel does not have said connector.
For the guys who have done this on their non-sport BMW, do I need this connector? I am still getting mixed responses from my local dealer. BTW, the part # of this connecting line is 32306777641 Thanks

To answer my own question, my dealer installed today my M3 tricolor wheel. I replaced the non sport wheel. My bottons are labeled different on the right side, but they work as before, except the up/down only works up. The dealer said its the software and needs to be recoded on the next visit. I think maybe if it works up and not down it could be a conection issue maybe? Any help out there? Oh the wheel feels amazing. |

Ok A few questions:
1. I cant find the slits for the airbag does any one have any shots from the side that show them? 2. Do I really need a torque wrench? I don't see anywhere in the instructions where it is used. Am I missing somthing? Thanks for the great DIY! |
