Bmw e92 coupe 320d

Thinking of getting a bmw 320d coupe 2007 - 2008 with mileage not more then 60k miles , how about its timing chain , at what miles should be changed ? How can u take care of it ? And if its need to be changed shoukd one change the clutch, pressure plate or anything else as the engine would be out from the car ? As my mechanic told me to change the timing chain its around 1000 euros

Your date range (2007-2008) covers 2 different engines for the e92 320d.

Early 2007 e92 320d's car with the M57 engine.

Later models came with N47.

Whilst the M57 is down on power compared to the N47, in my opinion is a better lump. Especially with a remap. This engine isn't known for timing chain issues but probably does have swirl flaps which you should consider removing.

The early N47 engines do have timing chain problems. A couple of years ago BMW released a quality enhancement program which was free for all Effected N47 engines (basically 2007/2008 engines) which replaced the problem parts with newer items.

If you are going for a used N47 (N47D20A) then check to see if this quality enhancement has been carried out. If it hasn't I suggest you get it done. However it won't be free unless you are good at haggling with dealers.

what are swirl laps and how about the cvost of removing them ? tho if they need to be removed its not a problem , if that has to be done .

Didn't know about that problem of the 2008 model , thanks for telling me , so in your opinion it is more worth it to get a 2007 model which doesn't have any chain belt but rather normal timing belt , and which will give less problems ?

Hey Mate,

Swirl flaps in m47 and n47 are two different types from memory there is 10mm difference the new ones are 33mm. To get it done in garage is about 200 quid on labor if you planning I would suggest seals for inlet manifold, swirl flaps with right size, glow plugs + controller (300ish) , clean inlet manifold and EGR in older M47 egr bypass is nice to have overwise clean it up.
