So unfortunately my water pump failed last night. 93xxx miles on it so I can't really complain. Was wondering how long people have had their replacements? I ordered the kit from FCP euro which comes with the Siemens pump so just wondering how often I should go about replacing them now that I have a free lifetime replacement warranty. Thanks for any responses!

Unfortunately I didn't know about FCPEuro when I did my waterpump. I bought it from oembimmerparts. However I still am not anticipating needing to replace it again anytime soon.

The purpose of the FCP warranty is not exactly so you can go around replacing your water pump whenever you feel like its time, I mean you can but I'd probably watch out for water pump codes and replace as needed. That's how I knew mine was on the way out.

I have bought other parts from FCPEuro though like spark plugs, OFHG, tensioner pulley, alternator and most recently the clutch master cylinder. None of these are things I plan to replace just because I have the FCPEuro warranty. If something fails, great, I'll get a replacement part for free...but I wouldn't go out of your way fixing things that don't need to be fixed.

I do like the FCPEuro warranty on consumables though. Eventually I'll probably get a new tensioner pulley and belt because they take 10 minutes to replace.

The waterpump is not really a preventative maintenance item. You replace it when it goes bad.

The problem is, when it goes bad, it usually leaves you in limp mode and stranded. So some people like to pretend it's a preventative maintenance item. But you never really know when it's gonna crap out.

Funny, I have 93,xxx miles and am on my 3RD waterpump and tstat! First died at 59,xxx, then second died at 74,xxx when my radiator developed a pinhole leak and my expansion tank blew up. That took out the water pump and tstat in the process of it all. Going strong since then though.

...which is why peeps suggest replacing it at the ~60K mark.

I dunno man, I'd be pissed if I were OP and changed it at 60k. He got 93k out of it.....but to each their own.

My replacement has about 70K on it. Car currently has 150K. Poor baby.

I definitely understand the not replacing it unless you need it philosophy but for some things that often fail, like the water pump, and leave you stranded it's good to have a bit of peace of mind by doing a routine change. Not saying I'd do it every year or anything but maybe 60k or something like that. Especially since I was just stranded in the middle of the night and had to wait 3 hours after AAA didn't send a flat bad to pick me up the first time...

Now for things like spark plugs and ignition coils I prefer to replace every 25k or so since I'm running stage 2+ mhd now. The minor work required for some of the replacements is worth it to me for a little extra protection

I won't necessarily go out of my way but definitely like to be a bit proactive. Right now the car is still my only mode of transportation so I like to take care of it the best I can. The extra elbow grease for the knowledge that I will most likely not be stranded is nice to have even if it means I theoretically replaced the water pump 10K miles before it might have actually died

Understood. In that case I would agree with the others who said every 60k is a good number if you want to be proactive. Depending on how much you drive per year this will give you plenty of time in between swaps to the point it's not an awful thing to do. Maybe every 3-5 years?

My pump started going out at 76k btw, 2009 replaced in 2017.

4/2008. My first pump failed at 36-38k. The impeller broke of from the shaft. Replacement fauled at 68-70k. The plastic housing cracked and started leaking. I'm at 100k now. Hopefully it won't fail this year. I have more than enough problems as is.

Thanks for the input! Yeah probably around 5 years which by that time maybe someone will have figured out a performance upgrade that last forever... or at least we can be hopeful

Jeez that does not sound promising. I've definitely been hear more of the crack and leak issues with the new ones. Did you use the Siemens replacement or the continental or neither?

There is only one 335i pump: Seimens=Continental=VDO. Depends how vehicle is driven and the driving condition. Stop and go traffic and season changing won't be easy on the pump. Have that in mind. Results would vary.

Mine's on the third pump at 165k. Replaced at 92k and 162k

My first pump died at 87k miles.
OEM replacement fitted by BMW was still working at 173k miles but was making noises, so I changed it proactively.

My first pump failed at 89k miles. Replaced with Bmw branded part. Second pump still fine at 145k miles. I plan to replace it proactively when I do new turbos, hopefully next summer.

Hopefully the redesigned ones last a bit longer than the early versions - I don't drive my car much, mine lasted like 7 years but only 18k miles.

I replaced mine preemptively since I was going to be under there installing downpipes anyway. This was at ~54k miles, the waterpump on my last N54 went at 52k so it was a good time to do it.

I purchased from FCP so I wouldn't preemptively replace it again until it throws codes or dies on me. My car sees less than 4k miles per year so I'm hopeful my current water pump will last me decade.
