So after a weekend of not driving my car (2012 335i n55 coupe) I'm now experiencing a dead oil temperature gauge. The gauge usually warms up and jb4 usally blinks/starts after about 5 mins of regular driving but as of Monday even if I drive 40+ miles the gauge needle is still stuck all the way left.

I've turned off my jb4 to try and see if I could pull codes but my code reader doesn't detect any thrown or stored codes. I also tried changing the oil switch/sensor on the top/rear of the oil filter housing but the gauge still doesn't move.

The car starts and runs but since jb4 only kicks in after 160F I'm not able to run full boost, last pull I only hit 10psi on map5 with e30 blend. A/C and heater work fine so I don't think it could be a thermostat or waterpump issue, and there hasn't been any sort of CEL or SES pop up.

After alot of reading and searching I was only able to find Oil Level Sensor issues where they change the sensor on the bottom of the oil pan due to CEL lights or codes calling out a faulty sensor but my car is still able to read the oil level through the cluster and idrive. Any way the temp gauge and Oil Level sens. are related?

I've tried searching the web for similar issues but can't seem to find anything relevant to our n54/n55 platform.

Any tips or recommendation for what steps to take next?

***UPDATE***

So today I went to my local indy shop to have my oil level sensor replaced. After further digging, a few posts mention the Oil Level Sensor being the culprit of malfunctioning oil gauges so I took the gamble and had mine replaced. Viola, didn't fix anything. Only positive things so far are that I have two brand new sensors and an early oil change.

No error codes
Oil Pressure Sensor replaced
Oil Level Sensor replaced
Gauge cluster works (Checked by doing a cluster test)


I'll be having it diagnosed this Sat. at SSR performance. Hopefully its back to normal by this weekend.

Have you tried entering jb4 menu and doing a cluster reset? I beleive it's 1 and 5. Have you flashed any updates recently which may have a bug causing this weird issue?

No I haven’t tried the cluster reset I’ll give it a go soon as I get off work. I haven’t flashed or updated anything since I installed the jb4. I simply just came home after a weekend vacation and noticed the temp gauge didn’t move after a 30 mile drive.

***UPDATE***

So after a visit to SSR performance, the gauge still isn't fixed. Zayn ran the car for codes and found nothing as well as the other indy shop I took my car to. So, my next will be connect a JB4 BT connect kit and manually override the "Oil Temperature Safety Feature"

Are you able to check your oil temp. without the dash gauge?

Did a quick search- oil temp sensor is on the driver side next to the hpfp on the block its $33 did it get checked or changed?

I tried reading the temp through the secret menu in the dash but it learned that it was measuring the water/coolant temp not oil. So the answer is no, i don't know how else to check oil temp level other than the gauge.

You need a scan tool.

But if you said you brought it to a shop to scan surely they should've checked if you get a reading?

Thanks! I just took a peak and I found the location of the lower oil temp sensor. I wish I found out about that before i ordered my jb4 connect. I've already enabled bit 2 in the FUD user settings. When I have more time I'll try and get to the bottom sensor and try changing that as well. I'll keep the thread updated.

Yes, exactly what I was thinking. If a BMW mechanic and the guys at ssr couldn't pull any codes then I think I wouldn't have any better luck trying to find the error code myself. For now disabling the JB4 oil temp safety option is fine. I just make sure to drive around normally for at least 10-15 mins before I go ape s*% on the throttle.

But what I mean is did they just check codes? They didn't see if they were getting a digital value from the oil sensor temperature?

Because maybe it's just your needle or something that's not working but the sensor is fine, so a code wouldn't show up.

Any instructions how to replace the oil (not coolant) temperature sensor on an E90?
