N54 Problem - Whining noise
Hi guys,
First time poster, short time lurker. I purchased this 07 335 about 6 weeks ago and have been doing some reading familiarizing myself with the N54 and BMWs in general. I'm coming over from the VW world. The E92 replaces my 04 Jetta 1.8t. Full bolt on, APR stg 2, etc. Anyways to the point. The car does have the wastegate rattle buzz for a short time after start up, but generally subsides after a few minutes of driving. A few days ago however, it developed this whining noise outlined in the video below. It increases/decreases with the RPM, and seems to be intermittent. Things I have checked: -Tensioner is fine -Belt is fine -The pulleys all seem to be okay, none of them seem to be screeching. - Power steering fluid is topped off - Car is not throwing a check engine light or service indicator light If anyone can shed any light on what this may be I would appreciate it. |

It's not the alternator bearing, I listed to it through an extension and it had no relation to the whine.
No mods. I'm in the process of getting all the maintenance up to date. Around 132k kilometres. Does drink a bit of oil, have to top it off every 3k kms. Doesn't smoke or leak oil however. Anyway I could check for myself if it's the turbos? |

It sounds a bit like mine did when the power steering fluid needed changed, it got a bit of a whining noise - any difference in the whine when you load the power steering by turning the wheel - mine would vary the noise as you moved the steering wheel and that was the tip off it was the power steering.

I doubt it's the turbos. I've heard turbo wine before and that's not it.
Just keep driving it until it breaks I guess since it's hard to isolate the problem. I would replace the sparks and coils, inspect valve cover gasket and oil filter housing gasket. U won't know if it leaks oil until you inspect it. Oil gets trapped between places like the engine cover

Make sure you listen to the noise from under the car. Put a sthetoscope (or a long screwdriver) on the gearbox. You may be surprised that although it is heard from above the alternator area, the sound comes from the gearbox input shaft area. Try changing the gearbox oil as a first step.

Holy crap!! Please keep up updated. Literally the only sound I have not been able to figure out. No codes , just whiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine. If I hold it at 1400-1700 rpm I can hear it while cruising. So annoying. Give me a code so I know wtf the problem is yah damn car!!Hoping it is the blower motor ...🤞🤞 Lol

Pavan - I'm resurrecting this thread to see if you found a fix or not. My wife's car has this issue (though not consistently), so I need to start hunting it down. Another video on YouTube claim it was due to the A/C compressor bearing but I installed a new comp. not too long ago, so I don't think that's the issue.

That will eliminate a few variables. You say 130k or really 130,000 miles? It definitely sounds like a bearing. It doesn't sound like a power steering pump bearing, but I didn't hear you drive it. If the sound gets louder, when you turn in a parking lot, that's your problem. |

I just began having this issue on my 2007 e92 335i
Started as the weather got cold (~35f at night) I just replaced pulleys and tensioner, along with the belt. I also replaced oil filter housing gaskets and valve cover gasket to ensure oil is not leaking onto the belt. Alternator pulley/power steering pulley/ac condenser pulley all moved freely and had no play/made no noise. This noise happens loudly upon cold start up and dissipates from there. Follows RPM more than it follows turbo spooling. It also isn’t affected by turning the wheel in any way. Car drives exactly the same. It isn’t wg rattle, it doesn’t sound at al like it’s from the turbos. Mods- charge pipe/bov Muffler deletes Dual cone intakes MHD stage 1 flash |

I'm also interested to see if anyone has resolved this issue. Hearing the same noise on my 07 335i. I will be replacing the serpentine belt soon (due to belt noise) along with the tensioner and idle pulleys.

First post I was driving my 2010 BMW 335i pretty hard on the highway the other day. Check engine light came on basically lost power and it was shaking pretty hard idling and then put into drive it shakes even harder. A day later it stopped and I haven't had the issue since (havent ran it hard since) only been a couple of days. Any ideas on what it could be? I have about 94000 miles on it
Codes are as follows 2abc 2cec 2ced 2cee 2cfb 2cfc 2do9 30ff 3100 I reset the codes and nothings came up yet |

I didn’t see any mention of it in this thread and the video link is not woikin for me, but is the noise coming from the oil filter housing? I noticed mine was making a buzzing/whirring noise and you can feel it if you touch the filter cap.
In this link it’s not an N54 but I’m going to check mine in a sec to see if this is the problem. https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=681808 Valadeezy, what you’re describing sounds very much like what my car did when the coils failed on mine. I bought (what the eBay seller advertised as)a Bosch coil. It was about $12 cheaper than our reputable vendors. That coil failed after not even 3 weeks/1000 mi. I then(yes after the fact) read the sellers feedback and they had a number of bad reviews for selling counterfeit Bosch plugs & coils. Some for other makes but some specifically for the n54 cars! Lesson learned. There is an EBay seller that has Eldor coils(supposedly the best stock replacements) w/Bosch plugs. I got those and I’ve put about 3k mi on the car without any issue. I also had the low boost codes and the large engine light come on(with idrive warning of reduced power) when I was not even 100 miles into a 600 mile trip. It ran ok just low on power and I read that it won’t hurt it to drive it so I finished the trip. This turned out to be the exhaust vanos solenoid. I cleaned it but codes/symptoms came back within a week so I bought a new one and it’s been good since. The other codes you have seem to indicate a fault with the throttle body or wiring? I’ve seen similar posts, may help to reset adaptions if you have ProTool or another diagnostic tool available. Last edited by Alloutofdonuts; 07-08-2020 at 06:31 AM.. |

My filter was collapsed. I put a new one in and made sure it was in correctly, with the tube in the slots. The noise is gone and I can’t feel as much vibration from the oil filter housing cap.
I changed the oil in March using Mann brand filter. Same one I used last night. I was of the opinion that Mann was a decent brand. Also I don’t recall hearing the whining after I changed it. Is this something that happens for some other reason than improper installation? I’m not saying I couldn’t have done it wrong, just curious if there’s another possibility. The oil change was done less than 1500 miles ago. My commute used to be very short. Aside from a 600 mi trip I took in April. I didn’t notice the noise until recently (not that that means it wasn’t there before). |
