Sending her off

UPDATE - No takers, see post #10: https://www.e90post.com/forums/showp...5&postcount=10. I'm taking the listing down and then I'll fix the few things that are wrong with it and reset the price. See other post: https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1866661 Someone missed a great, high-maintenance car

Just posted my E90 N54 335 in the "for sale" forum. $2,500. https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1866661

It's testament to how little these cars are worth at higher mileage. I will likely end up donating the car.

It's been a great car for more than ten years, and she still pulls strong. Sorry to see her go. Tiring of the time investment for continual maintenance.

This forum is part of what makes these cars so great to own.

How many miles on it now? Mine is at 196k miles. I still love my FBO and I have had it since it only had 17k miles. But the car just pays for itself since its been paid off longggg ago

227k miles.

"Paying for itself" has definitely not been my experience lol. The photo below says it all. Hundreds of receipts for parts and service, and behind every part receipt there is a time commitment. I've enjoyed every minute of it, but I just don't have the incentive to continue investing time and money into this car. I have other cars in my driveway that draw my attention.

Performance may not be as much of a problem as the unreliability of the N54, as pointed out in VehicularDIY's video on the deficiencies of that engine.

We will see on the resulting B58 (N54->N55->B58), but that might very well turn out to be another piece of crap.

Yep, b58 is a piece of crap, nothing like an “elegant 3.0T”)
Jokes aside, there are already some pushing 180+ kmiles, and quite a few with 90+, don’t see too much awe and horror going on with these engines.

In my experience, the N54 engine is solid, but the bits are fubar. Gaskets. Seals. Waterpump. etc... Maybe this is a problem with most [BMW] turbo-charged setups that run hot?

VehicularDIY's video mentioned that the shape of the valve cover, proximity of the coolant tank to the turbos, air flow around the passenger side of the engine as well as the fact that N54 has TWO turbos, one more than it really needs all lead to the problems.

Then again, N51/N52 are not doing much better with gaskets. The engineers responsible for engine sealing and plastic parts are simply clueless.

It is still good riddance imo.

Here is the link containing the VehicularDIY video on the N54/B58:

I bet it will sell quick. Miles don't kill engines so much as other stuff. Age is worse than miles IMO.

I have had zero interest, including parking it in a high-traffic spot with a sign. Here is what I think is happening - Mark is repetitive but not wrong in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qewXbAa8On0

High mileage, high maintenance car. Low price. Must be something wrong. In fact, there is so very little wrong with this car.

I've donated many cars, but it will be tough to do in this case. At any rate, here is what I am doing:
  • I've got an RMA from KW for the ST coilovers - they're coming off this weekend and getting shipped for refurbishing
  • I ordered new trunk lid pistons, since that's an easy one.
  • I ordered a VCG and bolts, that's a pretty easy one too.
  • I will flush the PS fluid.

After these are completed there will be exactly zero things wrong with this car. Well, except for the small crack in the windshield and the malfunctioning left side mirror - maybe I can pick up a used one.

At that point, I will list it for $6k and sit on it. If no takers I'll either keep it or donate it. With no issues it should get at least $4-5K at auction, which is a decent little tax line item.

Post it on 335 owners or N54 FaceBook group, ignore all the scumbags that think everything is overpriced, and you'll sell it for 3k for sure without doing all the work.

I'm into it now, and TBH it's been eating away at me that the car needs something. I will look into those forums when I get it done.

Fair enough, I can say I did drop a huge coin in parts recently of $4k and paid a kid labor to install it all. That was at 186k miles. But on the flip side of that... if the car drives for 30k miles than the ROI was worth it. $5000 / 36 months = $140/mo to operate my FBO n54
