Forget RWD or FWD, introducing sDrive!!

Trying to distract my self from doing a 5000 word essay, so I thought pop on to the BMW website.....and found the above.

You got to love the marketing department at BMW, so its official we now all have sDrive cars, who cares which axle it sends the power to, the important thing is sDrive just sounds cool, and so much easier to remember/understand than terms like FWD or RWD ...I reckon the marketing people at BMW could sell Ice to Eskimos without trying, and if they put their mind to it probably sort out all the known problems in the world

Think you missed the irony of the article!

We all have s-drive on all our bmws unless you have x-drive.

They are trying to re-invent the wheel by renaming fwd and rwd as s-drive!

This BMW marketing direction is hardly suprising given than a recent survey of 1 series owners revealed that 80% of them didn't know, or care, whether it was front or rear wheel drive.

But I bet 99% knew it wasn't four wheel drive.

So that seems to show that for 80% of the 1 series driving population (maybe 80% of all drivers) the only variants are 2 or 4 wheel drive. (or 2wd "dangerous" and 4wd "safe" of course)

I remember a (highly qualified and experienced) senior civil engineer stuck in the snow in the car park at work in 2010, in his ubiquitous 320d, frantically digging out snow from under the front wheels and tipping grit in the gap, then wondering why he was still hearing spinning wheels and not moving......

More concerning was the fact that I was the only person of 10 office-window onlookers who spotted the "deliberate mistake"........

I though it was a new "technology" variant of the 4 wheel drive system/ quattro/ x drive crap.... where the car would be either RWD or FWD depending on the road and weather "conditions" etc.

If that's not the case, then yes...all this marketing bullshit from BMW again...just call it RWD or FWD!!! FFS.

No. BMW call 2 wheel drive s-drive. It's not new though. They started doing it on the x1 years ago.
