Exhaust Fluid Reserve! Warning

Just got this on my nav screen. Will link to it instead of showing the image as the pic is pretty big:

View post on imgur.com

So I know that my passive tank hasn't been able to accept urea for over a year now and the vent is most likely clogged. See here:

Link

I've only been filling in the active tank since that time. So my question is, would the above "Exhaust Fluid Reserve!" warning message that I got be reading the overall amount between the two tanks or is it reading only the passive tank?

Thanks.

I just poured 1 gallon into the active tank when I got home. I believe the active tank holds 1.5 gallons so I was pretty much bone dry, assuming that the passive tank was completely empty.

Question: I used the 1/2 gallon bottle that twists and pushes into the active tank port. Can I cut the bottom out of it and pour DEF from a bigger jug into it next time, instead of continuously buying these 1/2 gallon bottles?

The passive tank is 14.4 liters and the active tank is 7.4 liters. I can't tell from the literature exactly how the "time to refill" signal is generated. Both reservoirs have level sensors. It has been my experience that I get about 500 miles per liter, worst case.

Your plan to cut out a hole in the 0.5g bottle and reuse it is my plan too, but I haven't actually done it yet. According to something I read, the filler bottle works such that it won't "overfill" the reservoir. I am not a good enough engineer to know if that has something to do with the vacuum created by the filling process and whether cutting a hole would mess up that mechanism.

Thanks for the input 335dFan. I just put another 1/2 gallon into the active tank. That's about 1.5 gallons or 5.7 litres into it.

EDIT: I would plan to cut out the bottom of the 1/2 gallon screw on bottle and use that as I poured DEF into it.

Why cut a hole in the container?

I just used a knife to break the security tabs holding the Nozzle on, and then screwed the top off and refilled it. Then screw back on the nozzle and you're good to go.

Yeah, this is a much better idea. Thanx.

So the message went off this morning about 2 minutes after driving the car. I'll address my passive tank issue at some point this summer as the car is under warranty either way. I just hate the possibility of not having the car for 1-2 weeks as they wait for parts, etc.

How do you guys differentiate between the active and passive tanks?
Is there a way to fill one or the other?

Passive tank sits above the active tank, as does their fill ports; passive fill port above the active fill port. Others may confirm, but I am pretty sure this is the way it is.

As I recall, I only saw one filler cap there. I probably need to pay more attention or just use a flashlight.
Good to know.

You have to push in rather hard before the smaller bottle will release its fluid, you would have to modify that if you want to try using it as a funnel with the base cut out. Like others have said, I just ground away the "child proofing" on the cap so I can refill it with a funnel from the larger 2.5 gallon jugs.

How exactly would I modify it? I bought a 2.5 gallon jug today that came with a funnel nozzle. I'll take a pic of it later. Could we simply put this nozzle into our ports and pour right out of the jug?

So here is a pic of the nozzle that came with the 2.5 gallon jug. At first glance it looks to have the same diameter as the .5 gallon screw and push bottles. Hopefully this can work on our ports:

That hose will not work on our car. I bought the same jug from CND tire and it didn't work. Go to VW/audi and buy a bottle of their DEF fluid ( ask for the small bottle around $20). With this bottle, you can screw it onto the filler port and fill the tank. After you're done, just unscrew the top ( there's tab that you'll have to break to open it) and refill the bottle with DEF.

Are you referring to the 4 blue tabs (2 on each side) where the blue top mates up with the white bottle? Or somewhere else. I have the bottle in front of me.
